Arguably one of the Sharks most loyal and hardworking players, Craig seems to be growing from strength to strength in every game he plays and is being rewarded with a starting 15 place after his fantastic game last week  against the Cheetahs.

While at Maritzburg College Craig played at centre before joining the Sharks in 2006 where he started his professional career at wing, now he is a hard-running hooker after being persuaded to change positions by former All Black No 8 Murray Mexted and Former Blues player Paul Mitchell at the renowned Iranz Academy in New Zealand when Burden spent time there in 2007.

Craig Burden is still uncapped at Test level, but was part of the Springbok squad in 2012 following injuries to Bismarck du Plessis and Chiliboy Ralepelle.

Craig has been capped 68 times in the currie cup, scoring an impressive 23 tries and has been capped 47 times in the Super rugby completion.

  • Just asking but I thought the change to hooker came from Dick Muir?

  • @Uli (Comment 1) : I also thought so but I did a bit of digging and the switch came in 2007 when he was at Iranz Academy.

  • I still maintain it was the worst decision Burden made, moving to hooker. At U21 level he was the best 13 I had seen in years, had a bad knee injury only to be told that post that injury he would no longer be quick enough for centre.

What a poor call by the powers that be, for within a year he showed he had lost none of the pace required for a 13.

I reckon Burden might have won a few Bok caps as a 13, he was never going to as a hooker with Strauss and Bismark around

  • Perhaps they should move him back to 13 and with Frans at 12 ,problem solved, two formidable centres

  • @The Hobbit (Comment 2) : It was Dick Muir who told Burden in 2006 that he did not see Burden’s future at wing as he lacked pace to be a provincial wing. Muir told him he could see him as a hooker. He was sent to IRANZ in 2007 to learn the trade.

  • @benji (Comment 7) : Too late now, I’d rather see the Sharks invest in Tyler Fisher and Esterhuizen at centre
