Yesterday we had a break from reality and delved into selecting a dream team of coaches for the Springboks, however unlikely those selection may be. Today, we look at something that may seem unrealistic at first, but could well be one of the most entertaining matches thought out.

Before I share my idea, I know that I will be shot down by people saying the players are already playing too much rugby, and that an extra match is not what the schedule needs, but hear me out.

The focus of many opinion pieces over the last few months, and even years, has been the amount of national players leaving South Africa to ply their trade overseas. And while the focus of this has come to light in recent months with the inclusion of so many foreign based players in the Springbok setup, a thought crossed my mind that I had to share.

What would a foreign based Springbok fifteen look like? We have seen the odd article where an entire team is made up from South African players abroad. Some of those teams have looked really good, and while they may be on the older side, the players all have an immense amount of experience, whether at international level or provincial/club.

So if we are able to select a team made up entirely of foreign based players, how amazing would it not be to play a foreign Bok team against a local Bok team? I’m going to let that sink in…

Okay, before you scroll down to tell me how bad that idea is, look at the team sheets below and tell me you wouldn’t tune in to watch this match:

Foreign Bok team: 15. Brent Russel (Zane Kirchner), 14. Tonderai Chavanga (JP Pietersen), 13. Jaque Fourie, 12. Wynand Olivier, 11. Danie Poolman (Bryan Habana), 10. Peter Grant (Morne Steyn), 9. Fourie du Preez / Rory Kockett, 8. Joe van Niekerk, 7. Francois Louw, 6. Heinrich Brussouw, 5. Andries Bekker, 4. Bakkies Botha, 3. BJ Botha / Brian Mujati, 2. Schalk Brits, 1. Heinke van der Merwe / Guthro Steenkamp

Local Bok team: 15. Willie le Roux, 14. Lwazi Mvovo, 13. JJ Engelbrecht, 12. Jean de Villiers, 11. Bjorn Basson, 10. Pat Lambie, 9. Jano Vermaak, 8. Willem Alberts, 7. Marcell Coetzee, 6. Siya Kolisi, 5. Eben Etzebeth, 4. Flip van der Merwe, 3. Jannie du Plessis, 2. Bismarck du Plessis, 1. Tendai Mtawarira

Note: I have put the recently moved foreign players in brackets, for purposes of highlighting other players who have been foreign for a while, while the likes of Kirchner, Habana, Pietersen and Steyn have only at the end of this last season made the move.

  • I know I have missed many a foreign player that may be better than any of the players I have above, but bear with me, I put together this piece in about 5 minutes with very little research.

  • The foreign pack surprised me.

Something that I did figure out when putting this together is that there are way more forwards overseas than backs, or quality backs at least..

  • What a game that would be, and with same rules applying to coaching staff, I’m thinking Jake as head coach, Plum as forwards coach

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 4) : I think it’s because we produce more quality forwards than we do backs, period.

  • @robdylan (Comment 7) : think the reason for producing more quality forwards then backs, could be we naturally big and strong, skill among the backs is a problem. I do think we have the natural skills but the way we play hinders the backs from playing to their potential

If he is, then I would just replace him with Sarel Pretorius.

    I will check that out..

  • I would definitely tune in, but I still fancy the local team more, especially with that front row. Also, Vermaak is overseas now.

@Richard Ferguson (Comment 12) : Not van Zyl?

If I had to keep in line with the probably choice of Meyer, then yes, Piet van Zyl would get the nod. Or Francois Hougaard.

  • Robert Ebersohn at 12 instead of Wynand.

The bench would also be very strong! You can choose from

    Danie Rossouw
    Gerhardt Mostert
    CJ Stander
    Wimpie van der Waldt
    Shawn Sowerby
    Jano Vermaak
    Ryan Kankowski

I think that the foreign team would dominate! The only thing that would swing it in the local team’s favour is if Morne Steyn played for the foreign team!

  • @Die Kriek (Comment 6) : Plumtree isn’t South African, was never involved and will never BE involved with the Boks so that rules him out.

That makes me very sad ‘coz I only have the greatest respect for him.

  • @ChrisS (Comment 15) : Jis that CJ Stander perd is GOOD! I cannot understand the bulls logic behind his departure, nor his own reason for it. I guess (and this is just my personal opinion) that he knew he’d always play in spies’s shadow? But he is still so young man!!! what a loss to SA rugby in general.
