  • We have some holes to plug in our last line of defence. Hopefully with Tim back in the squad he can start playing a more active role in organising the backline’s defence.

  • Wait, didn’t Letgo give Ludik a relatively high score for his defence?
I personally thought he had a poor game alround and is certainly not a 13. Which is why I was surprised he was given a 6 or 7 from our resident scorer.

Williams to 12, TW to 13 please.

  • Wow Letgo, you sure did get it wrong.

You also said Whitehead spent the whole night chasing shadows, when in fact he made the most tackles.

You do know the difference between Tim and Ludik don’t you?

  • @John Galt (Comment 6) : You do realise the ratings are completely subjective (as is mentioned in those articles all the time) based on what the author perceives? (And as far as I’m aware there are never second viewings of the games before the publishing of the article)

  • @John Galt (Comment 6) : it was me and yes, I did get it wrong. The ratings are subjective and I’ve never pretended that they’re flawless.

  • @John Galt (Comment 6) : really glad you pointed it out, though… when I got the stats, I knew immediately that I’d cocked up – was waiting to see if anyone actually reads these pieces in enough detail to have spotted it

  • so – here’s an interesting bit of vindication of my initial thoughts…. according to the Sharks’ own stats (which I guess come from Verusco), Louis only missed 1 tackle.

That’s always the problem with stats…. they may appear to be objective but are, in fact, very subjective based on the person or system that’s collecting them.

  • Mvovo seemed pretty effective actually, maybe just gives off the impression he doesn’t work that hard but gets a lot done. Kinda like me at work ;-)

  • Stats mean nothing and everything at the same time.

If a player was close to another and did a spectacularly desperate dive but couldnt hold on, does that count as a missed tackle?

What about a missed tackle around the fringes of the ruck, where the attacking player gets felled half a metre later anyway. Does that count as a missed tackle?
What about a tackle made where the attacking player still scores? Is that missed?

The tackle count I’m most interested in is the one in the red zone. Miss any others and the cover defence will probably help you out, miss those n the red zone and its punte.

  • @John Galt (Comment 5) : stats damn stats and lies. The netball players have Tim weighed ,measured and found very wanting and the reason for 14 tackles is they were attacking his channel for obvious reasons,Letgo was kind in fact in the assesment

    Yeah I know.
Stats, and particularly the tackle stat, can be very deceiving.

Wayne Smith recently wrote a very interesting article on how stats don’t tell the full story. Very good article you should google it and read it.
