SANZAR has announced that Saturday’s red card has been expunged from Bok hooker Bismarck du Plessis’ record.

In press release this morning, the Southerh Hemisphere ruling body found that “the decision made by Referee Romain Poite to issue a yellow card as a result of the tackle by du Plessis on Dan Carter was wrong, as it was within the Laws of the Game.”

This, in essence, removes the first yellow card from Bismarck’s record, although the second will stand. Had it not been for the first one, though – given in error – the second would of course not have been upgraded to a red.

There will be no further sanction imposed on du Plessis.

  • Now if only the IRB would grow a pair and start to have these “public” disciplinaries for referees who are seriously incompetent. Players have to endure them but referees are a protected species.

Like Nick Mallett said after the match – there are so many different avenues and help that a ref has these days that he should not be making these mistakes.

Until the IRB sort their referees out and this All Black protectionism which seems to be rampant in their ranks the sport of rugby will never grow.

  • @Butchie34 (Comment 1) : Agreed. If the NFL with their seriously over-complicated rules can get it right, why can’t the IRB?

  • @vanmartin (Comment 2) : Of course.

The problem is that there is always this favouritism toward the All Blacks where if a particular rule is not working for them, the IRB change it ala 2009 when we were absolutely destroying them in terms of the scrums and the up and unders and the IRB changed the rule so that it no longer helped us against them. I can’t remember the exact rule anymore, but I expect the IRB to remove the maul any day now simply because South African teams are the best at it and not the All Blacks.

In terms of the NFL, that would be like the Dallas Cowboys having a preferred method of treatment and the rules of the NFL being changed for their strengths.

  • This call and the one on the one on the Griquas’ ozzie lock in the game vs the free state makes me fume. The games are spoiled by crap calls then after the fact the cards are rescinded. Bloody madness.

  • Well that is great news and to be honest they did not have a choice. I’m however surprised that the IRB admitted rather quickly that a mistake was made.

Well done to SANZAR for making sure that red card does not reflect on Bissie’s record.

Ok now who will be attending the match up here in Jozi for the return and possible “final”

  • How he was ever given a yellow for that tackle is beyond me. It was like JdV said to the ref in the Argentina game “we want the benefit in the game” it doesn’t benefit the Boks after the game. We were a man down for half a game because of a dodgy decision.

  • @byron (Comment 9) : I think you’ll find that Nonu is still carrying that injury that prevents him from tackling with his arms. “We’re not playing tiddlywinks” -Steve Hansen
