The Lions’ attempts to become a Super Rugby force once more received a boost today with the news that a host of players have recommitted their futures to the franchise.

Bok flyhalf Elton Jantjies, who joined the Stormers as a loan player this year, is perhaps foremost amongst those, with the 23-year-old said to have signed on for a further two years in Johannesburg. Other players who went out on loan this year – Franco van der Merwe (Sharks) and Lionel Mapoe (Bulls) – have done the same, despite rumours that they were looking at moves to the Sharks and Western Province respectively.

Marnitz Boshoff, Alwyn Hollenbach, Ruan Combrinck , Jaco Kriel, Warren Whiteley and Willie Wepener have also extended, while Anthony Volmink, Stokkies Hanekom Andries Coetzee, Derick Minnie and Willie Britz already have contracts valid until the end of next season.

  • @robdylan (Comment 2) : I guess the uncertainty brought on by playing for two different teams in the same year didn’t help matters much. Added to that it must be disheartening to know the Bok coach probably rates you behind Steyn, Lambie and Goosen.

  • @robdylan (Comment 2) : He was brilliant in 2011 and 2012 I really think it was just a very tough year for him so far. He is slowly busy getting back to his best form and that is also clear in his kicking and line breaks. You could see the last 2 weeks he is getting his convidance back. Hopefully next year with Super rugby he can prove all the critics wrong once and for all and become a permanent figure in the Boks squad. Unlike Goosen at least he does not struggle with injuries….

  • If the Sharks don’t get anyone before the end of 2014 I would suggest Stokkies Hanekom as a decent 13. Jordaan is our only real 13 at this stage, so that’s something to look into. Still a long way of if his contract goes till the end of next year though.

  • Just way off topic, if Kings manage to burgle their way back into Super rugby who is goign to play for them? All their decent players have left? And they barely winning in Currie Cup 1st Div. Like honestly there isnt a SA Super Rugby side they can take from so what now?
