Doc Jannie du Plessis and Morne Steyn will each earn a 50th Test cap for the Springboks against Australia at Newlands on Saturday afternoon.

Coach Heyneke Meyer has opted for continuity, for the most part, with only two changes to the starting fifteen that faced New Zealand ten days ago. Bismarck du Plessis and Ruan Pienaar have both dropped to the bench, with Adriaan Strauss and Fourie du Preez set to start at hooker and scrumhalf respectively. Jano Vermaak drops out of the match 22 alttogether to make way for du Preez, who was unavailable for the away leg.

Bismarck, who earned a 50th test cap earlier in the year, and Jannie will now be the first pair of brother ever to reach a half century of Springbok caps each.

South Africa:

15 Zane Kirchner, 14 Willie le Roux, 13 JJ Engelbrecht, 12 Jean de Villiers (capt), 11 Bryan Habana, 10 Morne Steyn, 9 dourie du Preez, 8 Duane Vermeulen, 7 Willem Alberts, 6 Francois Louw, 5 Flip van der Merwe, 4 Eben Etzebeth, 3 Jannie du Plessis, 2 Adriaan Strauss, 1 Beast Mtawarira
16 Bismarck du Plessis, 17 Gurthro Steenkamp, 18 Coenie Oosthuizen, 19 Juandre Kruger, 20 Siya Kolisi, 21 Ruan Pienaar, 22 Pat Lambie, 23 Jan Serfontein

  • Bismarck hasn’t played much rugby this year, no need to ‘rest’ him IMO.

  • @Pokkel (Comment 1) : if you ask me, the coach is far too cozy with the limited Strauss

  • Wow not often you see 2 players hit a milestone like that on the same day. Wonder if they’ll arm wrestle to find out who gets to be the 25th / 26th Bok to achieve it.

I guess I’m not surprised that there’s no bench warming for PSTD, but I was kinda hoping to see soon-to-be-a-Shark-Lourens and or Marcell on the bench. The former didn’t get a chance to play any CC this last weekend… maybe HM was worried about the sheer volume of injuries plaguing the Kwas?

  • He probably sees Strauss as a better scrumming front rower, which is probably where he wants to destroy them…

  • @robdylan (Comment 2) : Good team and Fourie du Preez will make a difference.

I was always a Pienaar fan but he’s just too inconsistent.

  • @Talent (Comment 4) : I dont think he scrums better. You think? Anyways I wouldve gone for Bismarck. He’s got the momentum and he doesnt need the rest. At the back Ida played Lambie, but we should still kill them.

  • I can understand HM’s point of view. The RC is really on a knife edge here and we need that bonus point. The current 22 is in phenomenal form and if I were in HMs shoes I probably would do the same. (except I’d have Marcell on the bench and Bismarck would start) Just imagine if we do pull this off and win the championship despite what happened in NZ… Now THAT would send a message out to the rest of the rugby world.

I also don’t believe its a waste for the unselected. Been in the squad is a massive honour for the guys and the experience of learning from the best is something money can’t buy. Just look at Marcell who came back to the Sharks looking like a class above everyone on the field. Has anyone seen him so potent at the breakdown before?

Come EOYT guys like PSTD, Lourens, etc will get their chance and by then will be well integrated into the Bok’s squad, game plan, and culture.

  • @gregkaos (Comment 12) : I fully agree with you regarding the intergration of the extended squad members as like you said they will play on the end of year tour. However, these last 2 games are in SA. So all these guys will be doing is sitting in the stands and watching on Saturday. Now surely there does no benefit to guys like PSDT coming back from injury and who has hardly played and Marcel who has had very little game time of late. I have no problem with Meyer calling them up, but if they not in the 22 then please release them to play rather than carry the bags.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 19) : It’s a practical matter, they can’t attend both Sharks and Bok practice & team sessions, even if they are in SA.

  • @vanmartin (Comment 20) : Tney played for the Sharks last week, how much can change in a week? They could have been released on Wednesday and im not saying they could start but def play off the bench. I just think players could be better managed. They do it in NZ perfectly well
