White rumours gather pace

Stick a wet finger in the air this morning. The chances are, the wind is blowing Jake White towards a job with the Sharks.

No – that’s not official. As ever, we refer to John Smit’s statement on the matter last week, stating merely that the Sharks would be open to exploring the Jake option, should such a discussion float the former Bok coach’s boat too. There’s no inside info, or anything, to go on here – although other sources claim to have just that. This is based simply on what I’ve picked up and the fact that this much smoke is generally a pretty good indication of a fire somewhere.

Questions were raised, at the start of Brendan Venter’s tenure, about how exactly he would manage a workload that included the Sharks Director of Rugby job in addition to his flourishing Cape Town medical practice and an ongoing consultancy to Saracens in the UK. Smit, in a candid interview with Tank Lanning some weeks back, confirmed that he knew Vetner would never be able to sustain that sort of commitment on a long term basis and while we’ll never know the exact specifics of the agreement between the two men, it’s starting to look more and more as though Venter was brought in to steady the ship in the short term, rather than to necessarily steer her course indefinitely – at least, not in any sort of detailed, hands-on way.

White’s sudden (and auspicious, if also somewhat suspicious) availability might be just the catalyst to accelerate Venter’s inevitable plans to fade into the background when it comes to the Sharks. While I’m a long way from ready to join the chorus proclaiming that this move is a “done deal”, I do see how a move to instate White as the man in charge in time for Super Rugby next year could fit in with both his and Venter’s agendas, while hopefully leaving the Sharks in no worse a position.

It’s not often than a coaching replacement after just 6 months can be described as “win-win”, but that just might end up being the case here.

If it happens…

  • If it happens… I really hope Jake sees the value in the rotation policy (I’m sorry for harping on about this particular issue but I’m a big fan of the idea).

  • I have grown to like Venter a lot in the last two months… Would love to see what he can accomplish during one full Super Rugby season with the Sharks.

Hopefully these “rumours / smoke” does not break the momentum of the team currently.

    Time will tell.

  • I saw an article this morning by Simon Borchardt that it is a done deal, with Brendan Venter only contracted for the CC and JW taking over for the S15 for 2 years. As I detest the man mightily   I ignored the article until it is confirmed by the only person I really trust with rugby info these days – Mr.Rob Otto.

  • Rob, i know with the players, you may not negotiate with a player if he is still under contract with another union. Does this principle apply to coaches as well?

If so, John`s reaction the other day could explain more than what we heard.

If we tried to sign Jake, he would not be able to go to the brumbies and said that he should be released from his contract to move here. Jake would try and get out of his contract and then after “some time” meet with the sharks (or with any other union for that matter). Sounds more like a Conspiracy Theory…

  • I know, his rider to that (SB) was that he (JW) wants to get back into international rugby and end of 2015 after the world cup there should be international coaching jobs going for him to apply for. However it is clear this is all conjecture from Mr.Borchardts side, a man as I said, I heartily dislike.

  • Jake would walk into a job where the rotation policy has already bore fruit, lets hope he continues to give young players a chance. Brendan Venter has already taken all the risk and the squad has more depth than we’ve seen in years despite injuries.

  • If you’d asked me 6 months ago who I would rather have had replace John Plumtree as Head Coach at the Sharks, I would have picked White ahead of Venter – not an earth shattering revelation, considering his World Cup winners medal and his success with the Brumbies – but now I’m not so sure. I’m thoroughly excited to see what Venter’s policies and strategies could offer the Sharks over two years of Currie Cup & SupeRugby.

I’ve always known Venter was on a different intellectual level to most rugby players (I don’t mean that as an insult to rugby players, more as a compliment to Venter) and he’s shown a fair whack of passion whenever the cameras have picked him out in the coaches’ box. The man has grown on me and I’d be disappointed to see him go.

If White does take over as Head Coach/Director of Rugby/, I know we’ll have a good man at the helm – but I’d hope Venter would keep his consultancy gig and White would consider some of the policies (rotation, etc) that have served Venter so well with Saracens.

Have to spare a thought for MacLeod-Henderson and Everitt though, because I’m fairly certain White would want to bring in his own people – Smal and Jones, anyone?

“I’ve got a release which is fantastic but I just have to work out all the legalities around that release because I want to coach,” White said.

“Obviously they are going to make some constraints about the fact that if I leave they must be happy.

“I just want to make sure there is a win-win situation for everybody. I don’t want to upset anybody. I am happy to move on but I just want to make sure the club is happy.”

  • I am actually very worried atm, if JW joins and BV leaves. Then what has JS actually achieved now? The only thing he achieved was to give Plum the boot something he obv had personally towards him.

secondly in what position does this put the sharks now for super15? We sit with a whole new coaching team again, and jsut for JW to pull another fast one mid year about the english coaching job? I say try and keep BV here for as long as possible. this guy has shown more passion towards the team than anyone of our local coaches sitting in the same box as he is.

The amount of offloads as well as attacking play is something I haven’t seen at the sharks in a long time. My question is does venter have as big of an influence as we think or do the current sharks coaches have enough free space to try new things and it is actually working?

  • Maybe a little off topic, but the Doctors I know with flourishing medical practices, spend all their waking hours on it and they don’t sleep much.

Venter cannot be both the things he is reported to be. He either runs rugby for the Sharks and lends his name to a medical practice in Cape Town for marketing purposes or he is a Doctor and lends his name to the Sharks for marketing purposes.

    Which is it?
There’s not enough time in a day for being both and be true about it.

If SA Rugby Mag has it right, it sounds like Jake has made John aware of his desire to coach internationally again, hence only signing a two-year contract. He can use the next two years to win Super Rugby twice and thus perfectly set out his stall to have his pick of international coaching jobs after the next World Cup.

I think Jake is a good coach but I don’t want him running our playing resources into the ground in the span of two seasons in order to win at any cost. Hopefully that won’t be the case though should he join and he’ll continue with sustainable selection policies that require more patience but will yield more consistent results.

The biggest issue is that the all-pervasive influence of the internet, and the prevalence of hip-hop and dance culture has widened the gap between those bands’ audience and what your average casual listener wants to hear on the radio. That is all.

Give me a few names of stuff you like so I have some sort of starting point. Don’t want to recommend grindcore if you like country

  • @robdylan (Comment 69) : Im surprised at how many of those I know.

I was listening to The Boxer earlier today and I was thinking about the same thing about some song writing in the days gone by.

    ” Asking only workman’s wages
I come looking for a job
    But I get no offers,
Just a come-on from the whores on Seventh Avenue
I do declare, there were times when I was so lonesome
I took some comfort there “

  • @Culling Song (Comment 63) : There are ways to get it to work. Hit me up on email if you want the necessary pointers, it’s not too technical. Best music service by a country mile.

You can really recommend pretty much anything to me, my taste varies greatly and is ever expanding. If it has decent lyrics I’m willing to give it a go.

  • @robdylan (Comment 64) : OK, I’ll bite. Just a few comments before my recommendations though:
    1) None of these songs will have the same impact as Bridge… for the exact reasons listed in my previous comment
    2) Whether they are as good, better or worse than Bridge is a very subjective matter. I am listing them as examples of well-crafted songs by artists with a consistent record of excellence
    3) I hardly ever listen to lyrics, so if your idea of well-written songs focuses on lyrics, then disregard any- and everything I’ve said. Ever

So, off the top of my head, here goes:

    Nothing but Time: Cat Power
    Yet Aagin: Grizzly Bear
    Hey Jane: Spiritualised
Cut The World: Antony & The Johnons
    Michicant: Bon Iver
    My Man: Regina Spektor

Disclaimer: I *think* these are from 2012. I may be way off base.

  • @vanmartin (Comment 72) : See my comment above; I don’t pay much attention to lyrics, I’m in love with sound.

Having said that, I recently hear a really great opening line to a song by Smart Gone Crazy:

“His was the car on the road that everyone was swerving to avoid
Because they thought he was driving drunk
But he was only daydreaming about his new life without his wife…
…whose body was in the trunk”

Best thing about that song is how it makes a 10 minute piece still feel like a 3 minute pop song. Pity about the muddy production though
