The Blue Bulls have included Bok winger Bjorn Basson in their team for Friday’s Currie Cup clash against the Sharks at Loftus Versveld.

Basson replaces Sampie Mastriet at wing in the only change to the backline that ran riot against Griquas in Kimberley on Saturday (although Akona Ndungane does moves from left to right wing in the process), while Frik Kisrsten replaces Werner Kruger at tighthead in the only change to the run-on forward pack.

The Bulls need a big win in each of their last two games to remain in play-off contention.

Blue Bulls: 15 Jurgen Visser, 14 Akona Ndungane, 13 William Small-Smith, 12 Francois Venter, 11 Bjorn Basson, 10 Handré Pollard, 9 Rudy Paige, 8 Jono Ross (capt), 7 Jacques du Plessis, 6 Wiaan Liebenberg, 5 David Bulbring, 4 Paul Willemse, 3 Frik Kirsten, 2 Mbongeni Mbonambi, 1 Marcel van der Merwe
Subs: 16 Bandise Maku, 17 Dean Greyling, 18 Grant Hattingh, 19 Jacques Engelbrecht, 20 Lohan Jacobs, 21 Ulrich Beyers, 22 Sampie Mastriet

  • Call me a conspiracy theorist, why have the Sharks Boks been released? Is Mr HN helping his Union, or do Pieter Steph and Marcel perfected the art of carrying the tackle bags?

  • @vanmartin (Comment 4) : Marcel van der Merwe is every bit as shit a prop as Dean Greyling, have no fear. I mean, he was taken apart by a club prop last week!

    Kirsten does strengthen them, though.

  • @Sharksmad – The Blog’s Dudette (Comment 3) : It pretty simple – Basson has had his chance and has proven he’s not Bok quality (for the time being at least).

  • @vanmartin (Comment 7) : my gran is a better scrummaging prop than Greyling. He’s a bit better as a ball carrier, but not much.

Reality, though, is that we’re unfortunately in no real position to benefit from the Bulls’ weakness at scrum time – cos we’re not that much better

  • @robdylan (Comment 14) : That would be awesome. Is there a better loose trio combination for the Sharks than Jean, Keegan and Marcell?

  • Tight five I like. Backline 10-15 – is getting shape. Consistency from one or two players will help, but the Sharks are way ahead in the looseforward dept. Vleis starting rather than on the bench would have helped a bit.
Both Shark scrumhalves are better quality.

I am just glad that no shows are being dropped – kruger, jantjies, hattingh, murray, maku. Too bad it took a whole season to discover this.

  • Mr. Rob. . I know sometimes, whether intentional or not, the Titles of your articles can be misleading. I have now read this article top to bottom…even from the bottom up. uhm…. ok maybe because I stay in Pretoria and speak Afrikaans and thus may not always fully understand certain words but the Title does say Bulls BOLSTRED up… did you intentionally leave out the BOLSTERING part…. I just cant find it

  • @CrazySharkFan (Comment 18) : LOL – very clever :)

But if you saw how shit their scrum was last week, you have to concede that including Kirsten is a step up? Not sure about Basson, but he is occasionally useful.

Trying not to think about the selection headache when we have the likes of BdP, JdP, Beast, and Alberts back.

  • I dunno, gotta admit I`m a bit nervous.
Bulls got a massive result in KY, something we couldn`t do.
They`re playing for a spot in the Semi`s, something we`ve got sown up already.

If we rock up there complacent we`re gonna get stuffed.

Anyone know if Joubert or Jonker would be involved yet?
