In failing to pick up a fourth try in an ultimately convincing 33-13 victory over the Leopards on Friday afternoon, the Sharks under 21 side still have work to do in order to ensure qualification for the competition semi-finals. With Western Province running away with matters at the summit of the table (enjoying a nine point buffer), the Sharks are in a four-way bunfight over the remaining three spots.

Andre Esterhuizen got himself back onto the score sheet against the Leopards, after a bit of a quiet patch, scoring the Sharks’ only try in a first half that they edged 16-13, thanks mainly to the boot of flyhalf Robert du Preez. Scrumhalves Stefan Ungerer and Hanco Venter added tries of their own after the break, but alas the Sharks could not find a way to score the fourth that would have seen them move into joint second position on the log. The Bulls, in beating the Golden Lions, are now a point ahead and have sewn up one of the remaining semi-final places.

The good news for Franco Marais and his team is that they require only a solitary log point from their last two outings to ensure a top-four finish; with the Blue Bulls away and Western Province at home, though, they have a tough run-in ahead of them and will need to improve significantly if they hope to push for home ground advantage in those play-offs.

Sharks under 21: 33 (16) – Tries: Andre Esterhuizen, Hanco Venter, Stefan Ungerer. Conversions: Duncan Campbell, Robert du Preez (2). Penalties: Campbell, Du Preez (3).
Leopards under 21: 13 (13) – Try: Tiaan Loots. Conversion: Ryno Smith. Penalties: Smith (2).
