The Sharks have opted to utilise a full Springbok front row against Western Province this weekend, starting with Beast Mtawarira, Bismarck du Plessis and Jannie du Plessis.

More Springboks in the starting team include Pieter-Steph du Toit and Marcell Coetzee, starting in the second row and loose trio respectively. Jacques Botes, Stephan Lewies, Wiehahn Herbst, Kyle Cooper and Dale Chadwick all miss out on starting spots.

The only change to the backline sees Charl McLeod start ahead of Cobus Reinach.

On the bench, we see Herbst, who will win his 50th Currie Cup cap when he comes on, while Jacques Botes is set to become the most capped Currie Cup player when he takes the field. There is also a bench spot for Pat Lambie, who must be quite comfortable on the wood after so many times practicing this spot with the Springboks.

Sharks: 15 SP Marais, 14 Odwa Ndungane, 13 Tim Whitehead, 12 Heimar Williams, 11 Lwazi Mvovo, 10 Fred Zeilinga, 9 Charl McLeod, 8 Keegan Daniel (capt), 7 Jean Deysel, 6 Marcell Coetzee, 5 Pieter-Steph du Toit, 4 Peet Marais, 3 Jannie du Plessis, 2 Bismarck du Plessis, 1 Tendai Mtawarira

Substitutes: 16 Kyle Cooper, 17 Wiehahn Herbst, 18 Stephan Lewies, 19 Jacques Botes, 20 Cobus Reinach, 21 Pat Lambie, 22 Louis Ludik

  • @Alfred Krebs (Comment 3) :

I think Ludik leaving at the end of the season has forced him to sit on the bench for this season.

    Totally understandable..

  • @Alfred Krebs (Comment 3) : you can’t leave sp marais out of the team at the moment, he is just sensational and on attack is much better than ludik. The other thing that count against ludik is that he is leaving at the end of the season

  • @jovner (Comment 6) : I actually thought SP had a bit of an off day against the Bulls especially with his kicks. Both he and Fred are going to have to be more accurate this weekend becasue the Province back 3 will run it back at you with interest. Nice looking team. Need to win this one!

  • Good side but i wonder how long Beast and Jannie will last in the game. Depends how well recovery has been managed. Its a strong bench though. WP will be very tough to beat as they are the form side.

  • MARCELL COETZEE IS NO OPENSIDE…our Loose trio could get owned by the better balanced WP trio. No fetcher in our midst at all

  • @pienaar111 (Comment 16) : Thought Marcel was outstanding the other week when he featured for the Sharks. He ripped the Cheetahs apart. As for the trio I can’t think of a better balance than Marcel, Jean and Keegan. Tireless work rate from Marcel, wrecking ball in Jean, and sublime skill and speed in Keegan. Bismarck is one of the best fetchers in the game not to mention Marcel who showed us some new skills in this department and Keegan can do it too.

  • Very Strong Sharks team that has not played as a team ? This will be strength against strength and the first of two finals in three weeks! Brendon and his staff are experienced and intelligent about their selections but however WP with their springboks are certainly a formidable team and very balanced in physicality and attacking speed at the back. A few comments about the selections:
Catrakilis has BMT, Fred has all the talent but no experience in final situations. Would have started Pat to gel the team before playoffs. SP is a risk as he is inconsistent. Marais and Lewies are talented but no experience in this situation. They are up against a machine in Eben. Would have chosen Hewitt as he has the physicality, experience and played with PSDT earlier. All being said still believe we have enough to beat the WP. Go Sharks.

  • Fred will run circles around the Cat. Our problem will be goal kicking. du Toit should have enough to keep Etzebeth at bay. We may have size disadvantage at 12 and speed disadvantage at 13. Marais will be tested on defense. I can imagine Ndungane taking some of his workload in that area. Our loose-forwards will have to be physical but that is hardly a concern.

  • @David12246 (Comment 21) : I think you underestimate Demetri at your peril.

That boy is a SUPERB flyhalf who has already won a Currie Cup final. Also showed his class in winning a match against the Cheetahs two weeks ago virtually on his own after the rest of his team had done their level best to lose it.

We need to be realistic about the challenge we face. Fred is a young man brimming with potential, but to assume he’s going to “run rings around” Demetri at this stage of his career is naive – bordering on arrogant.

  • @robdylan (Comment 22) : I suppose what I said may have been quite ignorant, but I do believe Fred has a superior running ability, and this is what I originally meant to say. Catrakilis could still be the better 10 on the day due to the way he controls the game with his boot. I don’t think it will be easy for the Sharks by any means. We’ll just have to see.

  • Neither our 2 scrumhalves have an accurate kicking game-would like to see some pressure put on the wp back three with high kicks ,esp on the wing defending the blindside channel.get keegan just behind our 9 and chasing to harass in tandem with the winger.either win the kick in the air or bundle him into touch or win ball on the ground.

  • @50shadesofblackandwhite (Comment 25) : Yeah line outs will need to be very accurate this weekend. We are unlucky with Marco’s injury but he’ll be back for the SR.
Speaking of line outs though, I read this on IOL or somewhere but apparently Albert van den Berg is officially the line out specialist coach for the Sharks. Anyone able to confirm that? I thought he was just helping out earlier on in the CC.

I honestly can’t think of any particular area where we don’t have good players and depth for the SR next year. We’ll also have guys like Frans, Lourens (great buy IMO), JPP, Clyde Rathbone (Kidding! But that would be cool if Great White could convince him to come back to Durbs! ) back in the squad.

  • @David12246 (Comment 37) : Rotation system should provide them with ample game time and rest IMO. Each gets to sit out a game entirely every 3rd game. Probably a really good thing for Jannie even though he is made of 90% duracell batteries. Also Lourens learning from the single best TH in the country, if not the world, is not a bad thing for his career. God knows we need a backup to Jannie in the Boks because Coenie is not it!
