Western Provine have named some of the returning Springboks to face this weekend, but opted to give captain Jean de Villiers a rest in selecting him on the bench.

The Sharks will have to front up to hard men Eben Etzebeth and Duane Vermeulen, while making sure Siya Kolisi is kept at bay as they all start this match after having good games in the Green and Gold recently. Juan de Jongh also returns to the fray, having been involved with the Springbok setup.

Rynhardt Elstadt misses out this week, thanks to a shoulder injury, but is replaced by Kolisi while Michael Rhodes drops to the bench to make way for Etzebeth. Nizaam Carr missed the cut with Schalk Burger again on the bench.

The only change to the backline sees de Jongh start ahead of Michael van der Spuy, who misses out completely this week.

Western Province: 15. Gio Aplon, 14. Gerhard van den Heever, 13. Juan de Jongh, 12. Damian de Allende, 11. Cheslin Kolbe, 10. Demetri Catrakilis, 9. Louis Schreuder, 8. Duane Vermeulen, 7. Siya Kolisi, 6. Deon Fourie (captain), 5. De Kock Steenkamp, 4. Eben Etzebeth, 3. Pat Cilliers, 2. Scarra Ntubeni, 1. Steven Kitshoff

Substitutes: 16. Frans Malherbe, 17. Brok Harris, 18. Michael Rhodes, 19. Schalk Burger, 20. Nic Groom, 21. Kurt Coleman, 22. Jean de Villiers

  • @McLovin (Comment 1) : Hahaha, cute.

That front row – with a competent referee in Kaplan running the show – is going to get chomped, and Deon Fourie is going to get schooled by Coetzee, Deysel and du Plessis at the breakdown.

  • @MerckZ (Comment 2) : Actually we better make a plan for Fourie – he has had our number in a couple of games now.

  • Thats a good side. Should be a quality game on the weekend. The side that is forced into errors will end up losing this game. I cant see a big winning margin

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 4) : Yes, but he’s only a big fish in a small pond when our Boks aren’t there. With du Plessis, Coetzee and Deysel working in tandem, normal service shall resume.

  • WP front row will do just fine. And Fourie won’t be playing on his own. Plenty of beef around him.

  • I usually base my assessment of how good an opposition player is by how much I dislike them and so far in the Curry Cup I have developed a distinct disliking for Deon Fourie and Scarra Ntubeni. It’s going to be tough day at the office for both teams on Saturday.

Was a big enough katvis to be part of a CC-winning team last year.

I don’t like his lack of sportsmanship, but he can play.

  • @Jacques Venter (Comment 10) : It’s funny but now that I think of it, I also tend to dislike the better opposition players.

  • Who thought they would ever see a WP/Stormers bench with both Burger and de Villiers on it?

  • @Big Fish (Comment 12) : Yeah, he has a habit of getting away with it too. I’m not a fan – I don’t deny his talent, which is part of the reason, like Jacques says, I dislike him. But the Supersport guys rate him far too highly, so I hope our boys show him up as second best.
