Currie Cup 2013: Sharks v Western Province

Last time these teams met, Jake White spent time in the Province camp during the build up.

The tactic worked well for Allister Coetzee’s men as they ran up a big first-half lead; then again, the Sharks came back furiously to secure a losing bonus point that had seemed highly unlikely half an hour into the game. This time around, though, White is with the Sharks and while he has yet to take over, will, I’m sure, have provided plenty of input already.

With both teams Bok bolstered, this is going to be a massive clash with the prize of a top-of-log finish sure to provide all the motivation needed to hosts and visitors alike.

Kick off is at 7:10 pm. Let’s do this.

Sharks: 15 SP Marais, 14 Odwa Ndungane, 13 Tim Whitehead, 12 Heimar Williams, 11 Lwazi Mvovo, 10 Fred Zeilinga, 9 Charl McLeod, 8 Keegan Daniel (captain), 7 Jean Deysel, 6 Marcell Coetzee, 5 Pieter-Steph du Toit, 4 Peet Marais, 3 Jannie du Plessis, 2 Bismarck du Plessis, 1 Beast Mtawarira.
Replacements: 16 Kyle Cooper, 17 Wiehahn Herbst, 18 Stephan Lewies, 19 Jacques Botes, 20 Cobus Reinach, 21 Pat Lambie, 22 Louis Ludik.

Western Province: 15 Gio Aplon, 14 Gerhard van den Heever, 13 Juan de Jongh, 12 Damian de Allende, 11 Cheslin Kolbe, 10 Demetri Catrakilis, 9 Louis Schreuder, 8 Duane Vermeulen, 7 Siyamthanda Kolisi, 6 Deon Fourie (captain), 5 De Kock Steenkamp, 4 Eben Etzebeth, 3 Pat Cilliers, 2 Scarra Ntubeni, 1 Steven Kitshoff.
Replacements: 16 Frans Malherbe, 17 Brok Harris, 18 Michael Rhodes, 19 Schalk Burger, 20 Nic Groom, 21 Kurt Coleman, 22 Jean de Villiers.

    Not much in this game.

Lambie and Zeilinga both missed some crucial kicks, however Lambie showed some sick skills with out of hand kicking.

Well played province .Their defensive structures are truly a testament to how well they are coached.

  • Shame the rubbish weather ruined what should have been a good game!

Sad to say our goal kicking cost us as well.

Also, we’re allowing our guys to get isolated and giving the likes of Fourie and Vermeulen a chance to turn over possession. That is unacceptable when we’re merely doing pick and goes, there should always be a player ready to clean out/form the ruck.

Glad Kaplan picked up on the ‘Scooping’ where Fourie places his hands on the ground past the ball!

  • Familiar result against WP. Getting owned in the lineouts, scrums and breakdown. One team handled the wet conditions poorly, and the other looked like they were playing in the dry. No point the Sharks won the tactical kicking game whereas they dont have the setpiece to benefit from it.

Huge mistake to start young Zeilinga in these conditions.

I am afraid WP will have to screw up badly not to take the Currie Cup this year.

He was not released last week but he didn’t even get onto the bench. We can still win this. Lambie must start all next times. Remember him in final in 2010. He needs to get back there but how can he without game time. I sincerely hope end of year features players in RSA only!!! Then our young ones will have a chance to show what they have. It’s so boring bringing back players from overseas when we have everything we need right in our own back yard.

Was a combination of a couple of things though, disruptions in the Sharks tight 5 had them struggling for rythm. Eben gave Bissie nightmares in the line outs (remember he will know him very well and his trigger movements in this area) owning the front of the line out forcing Bis to target the back.

Loosies man-for-man were better than the Sharks, Duane was exceptional as was Deon.

The Greek varied his play well, Fred will get better, this was his biggest game of his life and it was in shocking conditions that he had to execute.

There is not much you can say about the outside backs in these conditions, but I think you have a gem in SP.

  • Just watched yesterday’s game. We made most of the play, our game is high tempo and is in line with our strategy in this era which is bold rugby. In these conditions we need to apply this boldness in the right areas of the field. On a dry day we would have won this game. I’m not worried and still believe we can win this competition. Our kickers need to improve their kicking at goal, we need to use our scrum dominance to put pressure on our opponents. This is very important, our Bok front row needs to add value, this needs to be the theme going forward
. Big game next week. Go The Sharks.

  • @SharksRTB (Comment 151) : Something needs to be done about Lambie’s kicking both at provisional and national level. Not just Lambie for that matter but all our kickers in SA. There needs to be a consistent technique that is followed. The same kicker can’t be taught one method at his union only to be taught something else at Bok level. This is the only explanation for this. Come Superugby he kicks well, hooks up with HM and all things fall apart. Lambie mustn’t let this kicking thing get to his head, he can still really excel in other aspects of his game which he’s really good at. On a different note, I’m really impressed by Williams, he has most of the qualities you want from an inside centre.

  • Hi Sharkies, this is my first visit to your site. By the sound of most of the comments, the Sharks were dominant and lost it – rather than WP winning it. Thats your problem! A little modesty will go a long way. From my vantage point, WP played the correct tactical game for the conditions. The forwards were dominant and their flyhalf superb. Furthermore, WP know how to handle a wet ball. And as for “GreatSharksays” who says: “On a dry day we would have won this game”. Well, well – what can one say to such arrogance? My boy, first things first: lets see if our teams can beat the Lions and Cheatas respectively, and then we can continue this discussion after a dry Newlands game. I really hope it will be dry, so that we can shut the winging shark supporters once and for all (not all of the shark supporter – only the wingers). ;-)

However the Sharks will have to sort out the setpieces if they want any silwerware.

My worry is that the Sharks scrumming has really gone backwards lately. I know we have had problems with line outs for a couple of years now, but the scrum (which used to be our strong point) is going downhill too.

Fortunately we have the Cheetahs in our semi – the only team we have been competitive against in the scrums with our second stringers.

  • The Sharks lost because WP played the smarter game, but they had the benefit of knowing the Sharks had to come out and win. If it was WP needing the win I think things would have been a bit different. WP gave the Sharks the ball the whole night and then tried to apply pressure to get the Sharks to make mistakes which they could capitalise on. And thats exactly what happened as the Sharks tried to do too much in the wet conditions. Why the Sharks persisted with throwing to the back of the lineout boggled my mind. And we hardly ever competed at the front of the WP lineout. Other than that i thought the Sharks did well to try and get the win in horrid conditions and with WP not trying to play much rugby other than just kicking it deep back to the Sharks. LEts hope for dry weather in the Semi!

Unfortunately that rain played well into the hands of WP’s defensive game plan. I recall only one time when they strung a number of phases together and they hardly dented our defences.

  • that first loss of the currie cup against griquas has come back and hit us hard. weeping province will beat the lions and we should beat the cheetahs but i just cannot see province been beaten at newlands in the final.

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 183) : Probably nothing wrong with it but if anyone knows of any technical deficiencies that Beast, Bis and Jannie have as individuals and /or as a scrumming unit then it will be him, so while not the necessary wrong it just does not seem the “right” thing to do. I wouldnt like it if he suddenly popped up at the Sharks training sessions this week ahead of the semi and gave us the inside info on Strauss and Coenie…..wait, maybe I would like it.

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 185) : Something else to remember… he also hails from one of the smaller towns around CPT. I know my aunt was with him in school… So obviously he would assist WP where he can.
Ethically I donno, but definitely advantage WP!

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 185) : I dont think he would be offering insights into the opposition when he does visit the unions but will be more about improving each unions scrum techniques and those of their players. So for example Jannie could improve the speed of his engage. Beats needs to work on his binding although his binding is a lot better than Coenie who never binds and is too upright. Bismarck does tend to stand up in the scrum when the pressure comes. For me scrumming is about the whole pack not just the front row and hopefully thats the message that is being given. Sharks and SA loosies tend to just be spectators at scrum time.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 187) : I think the guy that goes to all the unions is Balie Swart. De Villiers is the Boks scrum coach, he was working shoulder to shoulder with our front row fro the whole of the Rugby Champs. If there are any less obvious chinks in the armour of those he coached then he is the one person that would know of them. Yes scrumming is about the whole pack but it all starts with the front row – get the hit on them and put them under pressure and half the battle is won.

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 189) : Current scrums are supposed to be stable before the ball gets put in. Obviously this was not the case last weekend but probably to do with the weather and Kaplan not wanting to reset a 100 times.
My biggest irk about scrums is the ref tells the 9 when to put the ball in. Why? I really don’t understand this rule. Surely it benefits the defending side too much?

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 189) : Yes Balie Swart was going around the country but he was more consulting on the new scrum engagement laws than techniques. As far as i know DeVilliers has been working with all the props and hookers within the Bok squad this year whether in camp or through their franchises. Yes you are right that the ‘hit” usually determines scrum dominance but with the new scrum laws the ‘hit’ has almost been taken away as the ref only allows the ball to be put in when the scrum is steady. So its that secondary shove which is vital and that comes from the locks and the entire pack more than the props. The props are merely engaged in a wrestling battle and need to have a good body position to aide the shove from behind them.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 191) : I agree. There was not enough power coming through from the back 5 – and not at the right time. You can blame the props if the scrum collapses, or the front row cannot sustain the scrum forces and pops out. I did not really see a lot of that.

Proper scrumming requires all 8 to work together.

I also think due to the wet conditions Kaplan did not want to blow up either scrum, and WP may have gotten away with a bit of trickery here and there.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 191) : Sure there is no hit anymore but as long as the ref does not ensure that the scrum is steady before the ball is put in (as in last weekend) then the “hit” comes back into play.
