Sharks get Frans – lose Jannie

Sharksworld has confirmed with coach Brad Macleod-Henderson that Frans Steyn will start at inside centre against the Cheetahs this weekend, with Pat Lambie on his inside.

In unfortunate news, though, Jannie du Plessis has picked up a hand injury and is unlikely to feature. Wiehahn Herbst is thus set to earn a 51st Currie Cup cap, starting in the number 3 jersey.

Willem Alberts will also not be fit for selection as he continues to recover from a neck injury sustained during the Rugby Championship.

Our full interview with Brad will be up tomorrow.

  • Well lets hope he is match fit, and knows the calls, isn’t that why Lambie sat on the bench last week?
Willem has played more rugby for the Boks than the Sharks :(

  • Frans had been talking contact and training with the teams; I’m sure he knows the calls and alignment. Also looks very lean.

Our midfield had been too wrist on attack: I think this is a very good call

  • Robert Ebersohn makes the Free State backline tick and my thinking is the coach knows Ebersohn will have his hands full with Frans Steyn that he may not be able to offer much on attack. Still an interesting move.

  • Well with Steyn there Sharks can kick goals from 50-60m out and that can change a close game.

  • Apart from match fitness Frans is great. His biggest asset is his long range kicking ability, which could potentially make the difference.

My concern remains, have we worked enough in the week (late in the season) on our scrums, lineouts and fetching to beat the Cheetas and ultimately the Stormers?

Discipline is key as this will be a close game and the there is also rain predicted.

As an added bonus the Cheetahs backline may just go to ground spontaneously as all three are good defenders too.

  • @vanmartin (Comment 30) : Just saw a report that Ludik will start at 13.

And Steyn won’t pass, he has a decent pass on him, but he’ll most likely do mostly crash ball work, as he usually does. If he gets over the advantage line though and draws a few defenders and Charl gets quick ball to Lambie and the backline, it could be just what we need.

  • I don’t know if anyone agrees with me. But in the beginning of the currie cup season we all just hoped that the new coaches get some continuaty going in the team. We don’t HAVE TO win the currie cup. If we do win the currie cup it will be a bonus for me. All I wanted from this currie cup is to create depth in the squad for 2014. We have done that. So give steyn a run ASAP. The more game time our squad gets the better. Bring on 2014!!!!!!!!!!
