Cheetahs coach Naka Drotske has named his side for Saturday’s Currie Cup semi-final against the Sharks in Durban. As indicated earlier, he has opted to retain the services of Elgar Watts in the starting flyhalf berth, with Bok Johan Goosen again set to feature off the bench.

The only change to the starting team sees fit-again utility back Riaan Smit replace Rayno Benjamin at right wing. Benjamin drops to the bench, displacing Willie du Plessis – with the sevens star alongside 15-man Springboks in Goosen and Piet van Zyl, the Cheetahs will have no shortage of firepower in the closing stages, a fact which may prove telling given the relative youth of the Sharks replacement back division.

Schalk van der Merwe, who was red carded for a dangerous tackle last week, has been left out, with Rossouw de Klerk taking his place in the number 17 jersey. Hercu Liebenberg also comes in to replace AJ le Roux as reserve hooker.

Cheetahs: 15 Hennie Daniller, 14 Riaan Smit, 13 Johann Sadie, 12 Robert Ebersohn, 11 Raymond Rhule, 10 Elgar Watts, 9 Sarel Pretorius, 8 Philip van der Walt, 7 Pieter Labuschagne, 6 Boom Prinsloo, 5 Lood de Jager, 4 Francois Uys, 3 Trevor Nyakane, 2 Adriaan Strauss (capt), 1 Coenie Oosthuizen
Subs: 16 Hercu Liebenberg, 17 Rossouw de Klerk, 18 Oupa Mohoje, 19 Freddy Ngoza, 20 Piet van Zyl, 21 Johan Goosen, 22 Rayno Benjamin

  • Eaymond Rhule, sounds Irish…I like it. First you change de Jagers religion and now Rhules heritage. The last time you did that we had a good win. Long may it continue.

  • Their backline scares me a little. Our forwards will need to apply a lot of pressure throughout the game to ensure they’re starved of quality ball.

  • @vanmartin (Comment 2) : We must play total rugby, use our forwards to lay a platform and then use our strike runners to hit the gaps.

I hope our wings get to see the ball.
