Straeuli to leave Sharks

Various media sources are reporting that Sharks Commercial Director Rudolf Straueli will leave the union at the end of the month to take up an as-yet undetermined role with the Golden Lions.

The former Bok coach has been involved in Durban for the better part of the last decade, in control of numerous aspects – most notably player contracting – after he was appointed by former CEO Brian van Zyl. It is anticipated that he will take up a similar role in Joburg, with the building and retention of a player base fit to compete in Super Rugby considered that union’s Achilles heel in recent years.

It is understood that John Smit will release Straeuli from the final year of his current contract, which runs until the end of 2014.

Sharksworld has confirmed these reports with sources at the Sharks.

  • This might not be a favourite comment for a lot of people here, but here goes:

I think he can do really well at the Lions. He has a knack for seeing talent and can obviously deal well with the youngsters. Discussions that I have had with him seem to indicate that he was pushing for youngsters to make the step up during the Plum years, but that his efforts fell on deaf ears.

There is a lot of young talent at the Lions currently and properly managing that could see the Lions perform much better in the future.

Don’t be too surprised to see the Sharks junior ranks raided from the Lions side..

  • This is bad for the Sharks. He was a main contributor to the success of the junior teams. He was the coach/manager of the Sharks of the 2009 u19 team that won the CC. The players who are still at the Sharks and those who have left still have a lot of respect for him. No one is irreplaceable but he is surely going to be missed by many young players. He really did a lot for the youngsters at the Shark.

Nothing wrong with having guys there for a long period as long as there motives are good and they keep re-inventing themselves. and 2- who will replace him?

  • @MysticShark (Comment 20) : If there were hardcore facts do you think he would still be in the position? But having spoken to people involved with the union its very clear that Straeuli should have been chairman/president/CEO as he only answered to himself regarding players signed/let go etc. I struggle to name all the players the union has released in the last couple years…surely as head of recruitment he should be held partly responsible for retaining those players. At the end of the day whether he stays or goes doesnt really bother me. Im more interested in who will replace him or will his job title be dissolved?

So unless its somebody else’s job i would hold head of player recruitment responsible. Players like Ruan Pienaar, Rory Kockett, BJ Botha, Johan Muller, Alistar Hargreaves, Meyer Bosman, Riaan Viljoen, Jandre marais, Ross Skeate, Gerhard Mostert, Jacques Louis Potgieter, Louis Ludick and even JP Pieterson and Ryan Kankowski to an extent. Yes not all would always make the side but hell the side would be a lot stronger with them in it!

Do you know of any players, including juniors, that have left for another local franchise where the Sharks can honestly say that the decision to let that individual go was the wrong one.

You cannot keep every single good player, it just cannot happen.

If that had happened, the Cheetahs would have been the Champion side in SA and we would never have had players like the du Plessis brothers Alberts and Deysel playing for us..

Players move on as a result of either match time, more money or if they are unhappy with the coaches. Straeuli was not in charge of either their game time or their salaries, and cannot be held accountable for the results of the team either?

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 30) : I disagree, he is in charge of their salaries. If not then who is? Thats what im saying- who is responsible for retaining players at the Union? Do we honestly think that guys will stay cos its kiff at the beach? We kidding ourselves. Rugby is a global sport now so you have to compete globally. Yes its not always possible but these ‘youngsters’ are not putting bums in seats at the stadium now are they. Big players draw a big crowd which benefits in terms of ticket sales. Yes a cheaper team means we dont need to fill the stadium but is that what we want? I just look at how pathetic our lineouts and scrums (minus the Boks) have been and then look at all the locks and props we have let go. Yes the Head of Recruitment isnt solely responsible but surely he needs to play a big part in retaining players. If in a years time cos Meyer is picking overseas Boks we lose Lambie, PSDT, Paul Jordaan etc will we still be saying its cool we got youngsters?

  • If you look back on the omnishambles that existed at the Lions’ and the Cheetahs’ respective recruiting departments, we’d appreciate Straeuli more than we do. Contracts were watertight, recruiting of juniors and seniors was solid, with the exceptions that vanmartin mentions (I think Taione was Muir’s baby though) and we exploited the inadequacies of the Lions and Cheetahs at getting their contracts and recruiting right.

He was a professional, he filled in coaching positions when and where needed and, you have to admit, having a former Springbok coach around (regardless of Staaldraad) in charge of recruiting must have swayed more than a few heads towards the East Coast when they otherwise wouldn’t have been turned.

I don’t know the dealio, but we might have to say a big thank you to Straeuli for the likes of Bismarck, Jannie and Frans.

I think the strength of our Academy, having John Smit, Jake White and (perhaps) Brendan Venter involved in our setup will be enough of a drawcard for promising young players and veterans alike. Here’s hoping we can keep the professionalism that Rudi brought to the party.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 32) :

I hear what you are saying, but you cannot blame all of that on the guy who is responsible for getting players contracts? A player is not only happy to receive a salary, and not get any game time.

You yourself said that it is a global game, so players are going to move on, that happens. We cannot retain every single player, whether it is a youngster or not. The Sharks have done bloody well in retaining the du Plessis brothers, Beast, JPP, Ryan Kankowski. These are world class players who are all plying their trade in the Black and White during Super Rugby? What about the signing of Frans Steyn? I might not be his biggest fan, but you cannot tell me he would be the same player today if he had not gone to France?

So yes, Rudolph might have walked around like he owned the place, dammit, he has been there longer than the Sharks mascot! But give the guy some slack, he has done a fantastic job in his primary role, which is signing talented players to the Sharks and keeping the best of them.

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 35) : Rich im not saying he has done a bad job bringing players to the Union. But it is easier to get big name players to come play with other big name players as they believe they will push each other to do better. So yes he has done well in bringing players to the Sharks but of late he hasnt been good at retaining these players and maybe its not entirely him to blame, but thats my point- who is actually responsible for retaining players? I mean heaven forbid our 3 Bok front rowers get injured and cant play Super rugby…are we seriously going to back those youngers or will there be a frantic recruitment? I think the latter. I know players come and go but of late it seems more are going than coming. and yes i rate Frans Steyn…but since he has been back what has he done??

Having said that, when you read and hear about the kind of player environment John Smit and Brendan Venter are striving for at the Sharks, I always got the feeling that Straeuli was never going to be a good fit and his time was coming to an end. I’m pretty sure he sensed the same thing. I just don’t see his ‘style’ matching those of the new leadership.

The way he plays is more like a flank than a hooker. Hopefully up North he will learn quick- or if they think he isnt hacking it they will move him to flank. My original point is that the structures at the union are not conducive to keeping a large squad of good players but rather a good first choice and then youngsters.
