Sharks juniors in semi-final action

Both of the Sharks junior sides narrowly missed out on home semi-finals – each finishing third in their respective competitions. The sides will have contrasting expectations going into this weekend’s semi-finals.

Deon Kayser’s under 19 side has punched well above its weight for most of the competition, but was forced to pay the price for a lacklustre home showing which resulted in defeat against the Leoaprds a few weeks back. Despite a 38-0 thrashing of Western Province at the weekend, they could not make up enough ground on the Lions, whose single-point log lead sees them host tomorrow’s semi-final. With a settled side that has won at Ellis Park recently, the Sharks under captain Chris de Beer will be brimming with confidence for this game and it would be a great reward for a strong campaign should they progress to the final, where they would be expected to face the Blue Bulls.

The Sharks Under 19s

15. Colin Willemse
14. Michael Cloete
13. Wion Robbertse
12. Sandile Kubeka
11. Alrin Eksteen
10. Jean-Luc du Plessis
9. Cameron Wright
8. Ayron Schramm
7. Barend Potgieter
6. Thembalethu Williams
5. Pieter Grobler
4. Hendrik Botha
3. Bart le Roux
2. Chris de Beer (Captain)
1. Stephan Morkel

Replacements
16. Roan Dalzell
17. Michael Downer
18. Stefan van Schalkwyk
19. Jonas Mikalcius
20. Joseph Jones
21. Lotter Pretorius
22. Nkululeko Marwana
23. Riaan O’Neill

The Sharks under 21s, unfortunately, shot themselves in the foot last week by conceding a heavy defeat to the log-leading Western Province side. They picked up a single bonus point from the match for scoring four tries, but had they managed to pick up another, it would be them, rather than the Blue Bulls, hosting Saturday’s knock-out. With a settled side and bouyed by a win in Pretoria just a fortnight ago, the Sharks under 21s would fancy their chances – however, the Bulls exit from the Currie Cup proper sees a slew of young stars, including a capped Springbok in Jan Serfontein, set to start for their under 21s this weekend. Paul Willemse, Jacques du Plessis and Handre Pollard are among some of the other big names the Sharks will face this weekend and while we wish the boys all the best, it’s hard to see them matching the Bulls outfit likely to be named.

The Sharks Under 21s

15. Sean Robinson
14. Kotaro Matsushima
13. Garath Meikle
12. Andre Esterhuizen
11. Alcino Izaacs
10. Duncan Campbell
9. Stefan Ungerer
8. Guy Alexander
7. Johan Meyer
6. Khaya Majola
5. Wade Elliot
4. Wiehan Hay
3. Nicolaas van Dyk
2. Franco Marais (captain)
1. Allan Dell

Replacements
16. Gregory Bauer
17. Marne Coetzee
18. David Fisher
19. Dylan Nel
20. Hanco Venter
21. Robert du Preez
22. Michael Bernardt

  • A name that stood out for obvious reasons is Kotaro Matsushima, I believe is a South African born Japanese player, some video clips on youtube seem to suggest he’s good under the high ball, has a good step on him and has some pace.

As I don’t live in SA I don’t get to watch any age group rugby from there, is he any good?

  • Can someone please explain why Rob du Preez, the Junior Bok flyhalf, is playing off the bench on Saturday.

Truly bizarre considering Pollard is most likely to start against the Sharks U21 this weekend.

  • @Jacques Venter (Comment 3) : he’s pretty good, yes. I’m told that he may be the reason Eddie Jones was allegedly spotted at the Tank last weekend.

  • @John Galt (Comment 4) : it’s because Rob is currently missing kicks from all over the park, while Campbell isn’t.

    1) be the right age

And of course, well done to the Lion Cubs.
