Apprentice players – Yay or Nay?

The All Blacks have announced that Ardie Savea, a young and highly rated flanker, will tour with the team on the End of Year Tour, as an ‘apprentice’ player, to gain experience on how things go on tour and to benefit from training with the senior players.

Should the Springboks take a leaf out of the All Blacks booklet and do something similar?

How would you feel if a player like Cheslin Kolbe got called on to tour with the Springboks, as he is in the long term plans of the coach. I know this has been done to a certain extent when training squads have been announced, but not to the point of travelling with the team.

What do you think? If we do choose a player or two to travel with, who should it be?

I would have liked this to have implemented last year to allow the likes of Jan Serfontein and Pieter-Steph du Toit to tour with the team.

  • I think Kolbe should be on the tour as a player, forget apprenticeship. Players who I would tour as apprentices are Fred Zeilinga, Heimar Williams, and SP Marais.

Do you think Kolbe can take on an International test after a solid Currie Cup season?

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 2) : Off the bench with Habana and Pietersen/le Roux starting I think he would be fine. He is a real talent.

  • I think we should take along Pierre Spies and see if we can’t sell him for a good price while we’re there…

Fair enough – my personal opinion is that I would like to see him in Super Rugby before throwing in the deep end, but some perform better that way.

As for a player I would send as an Apprentice – Louis Schreuder or Cobus Reinach could work in my book..

  • Ya totally for that for a number of reasons.

I strongly believe that players should be integrated into the squad before becoming Bok players. No short cut to the back of the bus.

Look at PSTD and how much he loved every second been in the squad, despite the fact he didn’t get a cap. Its a massive learning experience for the guys and gives them a taste of what they can achieve, and what level they need to climb to.

  • Kolbe nowhere near Bok selection

I dont like the apprentice idea ,what message is it sending to guys who may have thought they had just missed out on selection? You need to earn you stripes…

  • If you tour with Bokke you should be on test level, you must be the real deal not an apprentice.

  • I think it carries merit for a player that is practically on the brink of joining the squad. Everyone and his dog knows that Goosen is in Meyer’s sights but he’s had hardly any game time. Take him on the EOYT as an apprentice and start Lambie with Jantjies on the bench.

  • Apprentice player? What for…to hold tackle bags and go on a holiday? SA Rugby doesnt have that extra money. To me its a serious waste. And this rubbish about players getting to experience what its like on tour etc. What rubbish. Its a holiday. If a player wants to experience the tour he must be good enough to make the 30 man tour party. Im not a fan of free holidays for kids.

  • I personally feel Kolbe is too small for test rugby. I think he needs to bulk up (except he’ll still be a bit short :| ) or potentially convert to scrumhalf? Just an idea.

  • @SeanyJMc (Comment 15) : no such thing, people have already he’s too small at the level he’s achieved success at already. He’ll be a Test player

  • @SheldonK (Comment 14) : I find it hard to believe any promising young player (who know the ones who dream of playing for the Boks every night) would consider touring with the Boks a holiday or a waste. Its bit naive to think that they simply hold tackle bags when they’re in the squad.

I know if I was a young player who got an opportunity like that I’d push myself to the very limit to show the coach how hard I could work and how much I could learn.

  • @gregkaos (Comment 17) : Since when is being selected for a Bok touring party a charity case? Thats like saying quotas are good because the guys get to feel part of the team and can show the coach how hard they can try! Im sorry thats bull! If you want to tour you need to be good enough, end of stpry! Why should some kid be selected to tour ahead of guys that are unlucky to miss selection or other young guys that probably deserve it more. Select guys that realistically are good enough to play for the Boks. And yes apprentice players just hold tackle bags, if they going to be running moves then they are affectively part of the squad and are thus taking the place of a player who could be there if they chose a 31 man squad.

  • @SeanyJMc (Comment 15) : He makes up for his size far more than Aplon does. He is more solid on defense.

  • @Ludz (Comment 16) : Premature statement .I think Aplon is a better option right now than Koble is. Dont forget that the Kiwi’s have outside backs the size of some of our loose forwards who can do what he does…

A good prospect ,but a Springbok, we cannot say for certain yet.

  • @50shadesofblackandwhite (Comment 19) : Meyer will choose him, the guys a good little flyhalf.

Cant stand the fact that our Flyhalves are standing deep on attack and just slinging the ball as soon as they touch it, but maybe it’s a style that they think identifies with Meyer…
