In anticipation of the Springbok End of year tour squad announcement this weekend, the backroom Sharksworld users have each put together a team they think should be announced.

The rules were simple, any players, anywhere can be selected to the point of 30 members. You can allow overseas players or you can decide to rest certain stars.

Each team is listed below, but I will give a short summary of the thinking behind the team. Firstly, Wesley has gone for an experienced squad including most of the players that have done duty during the Rugby Championship, opting not to rest too many players.

Charl opted for an inexperienced backline, resting key individuals while allowing certain big names to make a comeback into the Green and Gold. Clayton opted for much the same approach as Wes, choosing the best available players and rewarding some younger players with a fair amount of recent form.

Andre Meyer’s team was the simplest of all, selecting the Sharks team that did duty this last weekend, adding Jean de Villiers, to not seem too biased towards the Black and White.

My own team was selected without any overseas players, with the exception of JP Pietersen, who will be back in South Africa as soon as the Super Rugby season starts. I have allowed some grace in terms of new players, and believe from a rumour that I have heard that Arno Botha will in fact be in the squad to travel to Europe.

  • Picking a squad always leaves so much room for debate. In every end of year squad there is always 1 or 2 bolters and 1 or 2 big ommissions. So who will those bolters or ommissions be this year? Will Catrakilis get a look in or will Janjies be back? Goosen/ Ebersohn? Any of the Cheetahs back row? Deon Fourie? Trevor Nyankane? Will he pick Habana, Kirchner, Burger?

  • @SheldonK (Comment 6) :

Deon Fourie could be one of those bolters..

It all really depends on his rotation policy for this tour. Does he stick with Jannie having to play another 240 minutes of rugby?

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 7) : to be honest i think he will be too scared to leave Jannie out. Remember the end of year tour a couple years ago when our 2nd choice front rowers got humiliated big time, i dont know if he would take that chance. I agree with you about Deon Fourie, even possibly Boom Prinsloo. But remember the way the rucks are reffed up north are a lot different! Up there its all about numbers flooding the breakdown and falling over the ball which they seem to allow. So Hyneke could go with bigger players in his loose trio and locks.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 8) :

If Jannie does go, he shouldn’t play the first game (Against Scotland), and only play 40 minutes a match against Wales and France.

We need this guy to just have a little rest, even if it does a half a game here and there. His replacement, that is the concern..

As for Fourie, I hear what you are saying, and if Arno Botha is in fact going on tour, it doesn’t leave a lot of space for Fourie. Alberts being back from injury allows him to go, and I might even go as far as saying that Deysel has had a good enough season to potentially be there, but only if Francois Louw is not playing..

A lot of ifs and buts – will be an interesting squad either way!

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 9) : Personally i dont think any player that isnt 100% fit should go. So Alberts should rest, so should Deysel, Arno Botha, Goosen, and Jannie definitely needs a massive break! Taking guys on tour that are semi fit is only going to cause trouble if those guys break down early in a game or arent up to speed. I dont want to cheapen Bok caps but we have to see hw good the next in line is in case heaven forbid injuries force them to be our number 1s. But its easy for me to say rest players- the Bok results dont influence my paycheck as they do Hyneke’s

  • @SheldonK (Comment 11) : Arno and Goosen needs to rest? Why, they’ve barely played any rugby!

I wouldn’t take Goosen because he hasn’t played ENOUGH rugby.

  • @Pokkel (Comment 12) : Sorry by saying rest i meant not go because they are not match fit or carrying niggles etc. Jannie has over played so just needs rest. The others need more conditioning. To take semi fit guys to play NH tests is such a gamble.

  • @David12246 (Comment 14) :

Interesting point you make regarding the ‘apprentice’ player that the All Blacks take along.

I like it in theory, not sure if it is really worth the money having extra players go with the squad, only to sit there and hold tackle bags.

Surely this should only be done on home tours / incoming tours?

And then, next question, who do we take along as an Apprentice Player? Cheslin Kolbe?

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 16) : And to think that a few over-zealous supporters were insisting that Fred has already trumped Lambie in the pecking order after one standout game. Wonder where the lot of them disappeared to? It’s been awfully quiet on that front since.

  • Man there are some shocking squads there……retaining deadwood like Kirchner, Morne, Pienaar, Juandre Kruger and Franco v/d Merwe, smacks of rugby ignorance as are the inclusions of the likes of Cilliers, de Jongh and co. du Preez is not available for selection.

    My informed squad would be:

    15. Willie / SP Marais

    14/11. Habana / JP / Rhule

    13/12. Jean / JJ / Frans / Serfontein / de Allende

    10. Goosen / Lambie

    9. v/Zyl / Reinach

    1/3. Beast / Coenie / Kitshoff / Malherbe / Nkanyane

    2. Bismark / Strauss / Chiliboy

    4/5. Etzebeth / PSDT / de Jager / Willemse

    6/7/8. Vermeulen / Kolisi / Coetzee / Elstadt / Labascagne / Brussouw

My biggest call would be asking Irish based loosie CJ Stander to join the squad.

  • Also think L Adriaanse and F Malerbe should get some game time. Think d fourie plays better than m coetzee, but they won’t swop now. A botha have also gone on tour without playing, so that’s nothing new now…..all blacks not as clever as they think they are…..botha can cover 7and8, deysel just a nr7

  • Too many people get excited about the watered down cc….like applon that plays well or kolbe. In superrugby stormers didn’t play that well or score a lot of tries. Also its not about who plays well now, but who plays well now and who can be worldclass by 2015. Also players who can cover more than one position will come in handy by 2015
