The Western Province team to face the Sharks in the Currie Cup Final this weekend has been named, and sees no changes from the team that beat the Lions in the semi-final last week.

The neck injury that was threatening Fourie’s participation in the Final has cleared sufficiently for the converted flanker to take to the field and lead his team.

There are no changes to the team which means that Springboks Frans Malherbe, Brok Harris, Schalk Burger and Juan de Jongh add to a vastly experienced bench, which is sure to ad to the match in the second half.

Western Province: 15. Gio Aplon, 14. Gerhard van den Heever, 13. Jean de Villiers, 12. Damian de Allende, 11. Cheslin Kolbe, 10. Demetri Catrakilis, 9. Louis Schreuder, 8. Duane Vermeulen, 7. Siya Kolisi, 6. Deon Fourie (captain), 5. De Kock Steenkamp, 4. Eben Etzebeth, 3. Pat Cilliers, 2. Scarra Ntubeni, 1. Steven Kitshoff

Substitutes: 16. Frans Malherbe, 17. Brok Harris, 18. Michael Rhodes, 19. Schalk Burger, 20. Nic Groom, 21. Kurt Coleman, 22. Juan de Jongh

  • Let me be the first to say that this is a pretty good team.

Happy that Fourie is fit, so that there can be no excuses from either side that a single player missing the game, cost that team their chance of winning.

    Precisely..

I know playing in four Currie Cup finals and only winning one is rough, but at least we are consistent.

I would love for us to win this, and I think it would do the management team a great deal of good as well, to give them confidence going into next year!

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 9) : Well I dont think we are consistent but I see your point. Personally our performances in the last two finals have been really disappointing, and mostly due to poor selections and tactics (in my mind anyway)!!! As a team we have regressed since the 2010 Currie cup campaign…should have kicked on from there!!!

I want to see us improve in terms of performance – I hate to lose, but If we lose playing well I will be a happy man.

  • @pienaar111 (Comment 6) :
SP on the bench could be seen as a bit of a left-field move, but actually Ludik is a lot more solid at the back and the chances that SP will really make a difference and create something from nothing in a final, is little to none. And Whitehead with Steyn is much more dynamic and creative than having Ludik in the midfield – I don’t see tha coaches making any changes though, aside from Alberts coming in for Botes on the bench.

  • What do you guys think about Alberts filling in at 4 this week given the lack of experience there at the moment? He’s done a decent job there in the past whilst perhaps not setting the world alight.

  • @pienaar111 (Comment 6) : I like your team!!! We can do it. I hope we are not consistent this final as we tend to lose finals.

  • And we have to learn to spring a surprise and through the ball in the front of the line out once in every half as WP has their prop’s back turned away from Bissie to lift Etzebeth.
