32-man Bok team announced

Heyneke Meyer has included four uncapped players in his 32-man Springbok squad to tour the Northern Hemisphere, with Western Province players Scarra Ntubeni, Frans Malherbe and Louis Schreuder joining Sharks phenom Pieter-Steph du Toit on the plane.

There have been recalls for a number of foreign stalwarts… Bakkies Botha, Jaque Fourie and JP Pietersen all return to the team, as do Johan Goosen and Gio Aplon, who haven’t been selected yet this year.

Frans Steyn and Lwazi Mvovo miss out, from a Sharks point of view, while Lourens Adriaanse, Juan de Jongh, Piet van Zyl, Franco van der Merwe and Juandre Kruger are the big names missing from the group that played during the Rugby Championship series.

Springboks: Tendai Mtawarira, Gurthro Steenkamp, Jannie du Plessis, Coenie Oosthuizen, Frans Malherbe, Bismarck du Plessis, Adriaan Strauss, Siyabonga Ntubeni, Bakkies Botha, Eben Etzebeth, Flip van der Merwe, Pieter-Steph du Toit, Francois Louw, Willem Alberts, Duane Vermeulen, Marcell Coetzee, Siya Kolisi, Ruan Pienaar, Fourie du Preez, Louis Schreuder, Morne Steyn, Patrick Lambie, Johan Goosen, Jean de Villiers (capt), Jan Serfontein, JJ Engelbrecht, Jaque Fourie, JP Pietersen, Bryan Habana, Willie le Roux, Gio Aplon, Zane Kirchner

  • - How the hell is Zane Kirchner still in the squad?!
    - Flip van der Merwe? Really?
    - Jannie du Plessis? What the hell did he do to get selected?

Meanwhile we only have Louis Schreuder, Pieter-Steph du Toit (great to see him by the way), Scarra Ntunbeni and Frans Malherbe as uncapped players.

Why the hell are we not trying some new things? There is nothing to gain in this tour. We are 2nd on the IRB ranking, already protected in the World Cup draw that was last year. Nothing to lose and still this conservative, cautious crap we have to deal with!

Does not say a lot for upcoming scrummy talent in SA (as per HM) if Schroeder is selected as the 3rd choice.

  • You can make a pretty decent “traditional” Bok side with this lot, even if most of their best days were in 2009:

    1. Tendai Mtawarira
    2. Bismarck du Plessis
    3. Jannie du Plessis
    4. Eben Etzebeth
    5. Pieter-Steph du Toit
    6. Francois Louw
    7. Willem Alberts
    8. Duane Vermeulen
    9. Fourie du Preez
    10. Morne Steyn
    11. Bryan Habana
    12. Jean de Villiers (capt)
    13. Jaque Fourie
    14. JP Pietersen
    15. Willie le Roux

    16. Adriaan Strauss
    17. Gurthro Steenkamp
    18. Coenie Oosthuizen
    19. Flip van der Merwe
    20. Marcell Coetzee
    21. Ruan Pienaar
    22. Patrick Lambie
    23. Gio Aplon

    Frans Malherbe
    Siyabonga Ntubeni
    Bakkies Botha
    Siya Kolisi
    Johan Goosen
    Louis Schreuder
    Jan Serfontein
    JJ Engelbrecht
Zane Kirchner Ltd (Not a company, but a description)

I think too many under-par WP players were rewarded for their unbeaten season – even if the gloss was taken off by their performance in the final. Meyer clearly believes the hype. I would have liked to have seen Jannie rested in favour of Lourens Adriaanse, a more exciting loose trio tested and Zane Kirchner finally ditched.

  • -Gurthro Steenkamp is not one of our top loose-heads.
-I think the inclusion of Ruan Pienaar is pretty unanimously agreed to be stupid.
-I don’t see how Schreuder’s performance of Saturday warrants a place in the squad ahead of McLeod.
-I still think Steyn is a waste of time.
-Goosen isn’t ready and I’m sure everyone will concede he is too brittle for test rugby.
-I fear that Meyer won’t use the younger centres enough with both de Villiers and Fourie there.
-Aplon has never really proven his value consistently at test level. He is too much of a liability on defense.
-Zane Kirchner needs to retire from professional rugby.
-One of the most worrying things is that almost a third of the squad is based overseas. NZ and Australia have 0 players based overseas.

Once again Meyer fails to think about the future. I can’t help but feel that he is ignorant of such realities.

  • Schreuder was included because he plays the type of game Meyer looks for in a 9. His inclusion is simply to expose a young player to the environment, he will not get a game. Our two top ranked scrummies are FDP and Ruan, then Jano. As far as McLeod goes, his age counts against him and I can also go back when he was publicly lynched a couple of times on this site this year. Reinach recovered from injury and could not get a starting spot in most of this recent CC campaign.

The same goes for Scarra, he will not get a game unless things go really wrong really quickly in the last minute on tour – and even then Schalk Brits is a couple of hours away. Young player being exposed to the system and environment.

Goosen is there because we have 3 flyhalf’s for 2015, Morne, Lambie and Goose, Meyer is re-introducing him to the system.

Steyn, Burger both came back from serious, long-term injuries – they have the whole of 2014 to get themselves 100% fit, a tour now would not serve them or the team as we know how Heyneke rates both. Rather let them have a decent off-season and condition themselves to proper fitness.

The re-introduction of Mossie, JPP and Bakkies is an awesome thing in my view, PSDT and Eben is the future of Bok rugby, who better to guide them than Bakkies. Mossie and JPP would crack a nod in my team (if fit) over and outside center and wing even 2 years from now.

Heyneke is developing 3 to 4 players (who are exposed to this environment) in every single position and it seems most folks miss this very obvious fact.

Reinach, Van Zyl, Adriaanse, etc are not forgotten, they are simply not used for 3 tests where you can only take so many players to try and win first and foremost, and while doing it, try and build the depth NZ has without the luxury of controlling the franchises and the game management like they do.

I know you got a shiny cup, but perspective chaps.

  • At the route of this it is SARU’s fault. They need to implement a policy limiting foreign based players in the Bok squad. I would say to at most 2. One must consider how easy it is to select the foreign based players.

In case anyone asks, if it were to be limited to 2, the 2 I would pick would be du Preez and Louw, with the 3rd choice being Pietersen.

I can see the logic in having 2 out and out 12′s and 13′s in the squad and see the obvious value in De Villiers and Serfontein but playing Jaques Fourie when there are viable options who play in South Africa is a mistake. This will be the oldest springbok backline ever fielded if things go the way I think they will. So much for building toward the future.

Rory would have been an interesting selection but as you previously explained that ain’t gonna happen. Still sad about Frans but I guess caution is wise as he’s just recovered from injury. Two selections really confuse me though. I’ve never seen Gio Aplon as the type of player that Meyer would consider a RWC prospect and we clearly have better options than Guthro?

  • Every coach, and every fan for that matter has their favourites that not everyone agrees with. The coach does not pick players to spite anyone- that would be retarded! He picks the players he genuinely believes can execute his game plan. We also need to remember that this squad was more than likely picked after the Currie Cup Semis at the very latest so everyone needs to take the final out of context. Yes some players are unlucky- there will always be unlucky players. So lets not criticise but rather congratulate those in the setup. I mean its not like he picked Earl Rose, Ricky Januarie and Jorrie Muller did he? There are a lot of good players in that squad and we will need all of them for these 3 very tough tests.

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 67) : Its not the picking of the match day 23 that worries me but more how he uses his bench. He cannot continue to just sub the front row every game on 50min and then sub his backs in the last 5min. Its Hyeneke Meyer’s biggest weakness- his substitutions.

Not quite true, I also read it that way the first time.

    Read it carefully

‘ has learned that Steyn would have toured with the Springboks in November had he been selected, but the Sharks have now decided that it would be best for him to have a scope to remove whatever still needs to be removed from his previous operation.’

  • Ja I don’t know hey ouens – a good squad I suppose but this thing of picking foreign based players makes upsets me :x
Surely we have enough talent in SA to cover the guys that are seemingly “irreplaceable” playing overseas. I would have used this end of year tour to give some older guys a rest and young guys a chance. But that’s just me

If not indicative of a player with Test potential then I don’t know what is to be honest. The fact is he’s touring to get into the Bok culture, learn from the world’s 2 best hookers. Soak up the Bok experience.

I am the last person to ask about props, and as I mentioned, there are some selections I do not agree with personally this being one.

    As far as Scarra goes.

Who would you rather hold tackle bags (because this is what the 3rd hooker on tour does) – Chili or Scarra? In other words, who would benefit most going on tour knowing they won’t get any game time? You have 32 players in this squad, only 23 will play so you have 9 tourists of which 6 may be included or rotated into match day squads with the rest there for the experience.

With Jaque back, who do you reckon is most likely to take over from him after 2015? Juan or JJ?

Which other fullback (apart from those in the squad) should be there ahead of Kirchner?

Willie, like Mvovo might have mad skills with ball in hand, but their positional play and defence (Willie specifically) is bloody horrid. Same goes for Aplon impo – as was proven on Saturday. When you have an in your face defence and there is limited space, you take away the only real weapon he has.

Heyneke has about 6 tests left to settle on his squad of 30 players for the RWC in 2016. Then he has to hope to god none of them pick up injuries but if they do he needs to know what he has in the next 2 to 3 players down the line.

Personal opinion on about 5 players selected aside (and some who should have been rested), I think this is a very good squad going into 2015.

Well we cannot pick NZ’landers for the Boks can we? I was talking about Bok players. And the pick of the Bok backs for me this year was Jean, Bryan, Morne and Kirchner. Fourie had a very good 20 minutes against the Argies but did not play enough – still the best option at 9 though.

  • @The Hobbit (Comment 65) : Thanks for the info on Steyn. Much happier that he’s staying home now.

Regarding the fullback debate. Really hope Meyer considers some other players like Boshoff or perhaps Marais (maybe even Taute if he has a good season) before his final decision is made on his RWC squad. If Jean and Jacques keep their form and remain a first choice combo through to the RWC, I think Fransie should be used as fullback.

  • @Morné (Comment 80) :
My point on Mvovo is that he doesn’t fit Meyer’s game plan. So I have no issue with that, except that neither do Aplon (already 30-odd) and Willie du Plessis???

With regard to the rest, maybe the issue is that I simply don’t rate JJ and Kirchner, and I don’t think that Ntubeni is there for the right reasons.

  • @Big Fish (Comment 84) : I’m glad you’re happy for Scarra even if you feel, he’s not there for the right reason. That said he’s been the form hooker, the entire Currie Cup, I find it quite distateful that other reason are cited for his inclusion and his form is being overlooked now. 1 bad game doesn’t make a player.

Ludz, I think people are overlooking Kyle Cooper here and that bothers me a bit. Bissie came back and of course Kyle is forgotten, but he had a huge season. It’s hard playing behind the number 1 in the world and getting noticed, but Kyle did that.

However, this being a Sharks website I don’t think our opinion on a Sharks player over a WP player will carry much weight. And I rate both players, but feel Kyle has been putting in big performances consistently just a little longer than Ntubeni has.

  • @Ludz (Comment 85) : I think you’ll find the majority of people are excited by his inclusion and feel he’s been selected based on his playing ability. Sure, there are a few on Sharksworld who don’t rate him but you’ll find that with any other player too. I think it’s time to move beyond this point of feeling offended or disappointed every time when every single does not agree on players you rate.

  • @Big Fish (Comment 83) :

Mvovo, Aplon and Willie are all attacking players by nature, all with big question marks over their defence and positional play on defence. You might get away with one of them in a team as has been the case with Willie, put two of them at the back and you are asking for kak imo.

I don’t see why Scarra is not there for the ‘right reasons’. Up and coming hooker, had a stellar season winning a couple of MOTM awards and rewarded on form. By now we know what we have in Chili, we know our two best hookers are Adriaan and Bis. What would be the point of including Chili in another tour as a 3rd choice hooker where you can rather introduce an up and coming youngster into the setup?
