The Cup is Home!

The Sharks was welcomed home yesterday by a healthy crowd at the King Shaka Airport, with the Currie Cup safely tucked under captain Keegan Daniel’s arm. The premier of KwaZulu-Natal Senzo Mchunu was at the event and praised the Sharks team for winning the Currie Cup Trophy and said there will be a series of victory celebrations for the Sharks. Sharks CEO, John Smit,  also addressed the enthusiastic crowd, before Keegan Daniel thanked the fans that supported them throughout the season and made special mention for the entire Sharks team, that built towards a successful season this year.

The Currie Cup was on display for fans to get up close and personal with and a couple of fans were even lucky enough to take a turn lifting the cup themselves. And for those who didn’t get a chance it seems that the Sharks will set up a time for fans to do the same at some point.

I tried to take a couple of good videos and photo’s, but I think I was to excited to concentrate on where I was aiming. I did get a couple of nice ones though:

  • Well done Maria. I’m going to check the video now. Wish I was still living in KZN so I could be a part of the celebrations.

  • Well done Sharks! You deserve to bring the cup home.
I still cannot decide on the MOTM though as everyone had fantastic moments. Should it be the forwards who dominated the WP. Beast, Jannie, Keegan, Botes, Willem, Herbst or Marcell who worked hard all day in the engine room. What about our locks for great lineout pressure? PSDT and Bissie for go forward ball? McLeod and Lambie who were working hard for position and scoring all the points between them? Ludick and Steyn for earth shattering defence on Gio and Colby? Mvovo, SP or Odwa for chasing every ball and falling back to defend? Should it not be Brendan, John, Jake, Henderson and the rest of the coaches? What is so nice is to have named everyone and thanking the broken guys such as Deysel, young guns such as Fred, Cobus, Heimar, Kyle, Minie, Lewies and the other boys who put us in the finals because this year again was about a team effort just like previous times when we won the CC! Fantastic game, Great season!!

  • I think a big secret to the Sharks’ success was the rotation policy, which meant all the players got good game-time. This also builds great team spirit, which you could see between the players in every game. With every scrum that pounded the opposition, the team would cheer each other. If someone gave away a penalty, another player would pat them on the back. I say the team did a great job this season! Well done! Proud to always be a Shark!
