The low down on the Bok squad

News filtering in from all over the place this morning has each newspaper, website and blog claiming to have some inside information about the make-up of the Springbok squad to be announced this evening. Well, here are some of the headlines, recapped for you.

It seems that the overall feeling is that Heyneke Meyer will include all of his overseas players, much like he did for the Rugby Championship, and there seems to be no planned resting of any players.

It looks like we are in line to see Fourie du Preez in the squad, his availability for the tests being confirmed by Brenden Nel himself. He may not be the only player from the Japanese league as rumours are strongly indicating returns for JP Pietersen and Jaque Fourie.

Our favourite site, SA Rugby Mag, claims that Bakkies Botha will be back for the tour while Rory Kockett will not be included in the squad. Kockett’s exclusion is as mind boggling as Bakkies’ inclusion will be, especially after the showing of young Pieter-Steph du Toit. Bakkies might be a perfect mentor, seeing as both are 100% Afrikaans, but if Bakkies is to take away any game time from du Toit, I simply cannot agree with his inclusion.

Of the Northerly based players, we see calls for Chilliboy Ralepelle being touted as the third hooker, while Francois Louw, Morne Steyn, Guthro Steenkamp and Zane Kirchner look set to join the team once they arrive in Europe.

I am personally calling for Arno Botha to be included in the tour, based on what I have heard from a source, but we will have to wait and see if this is reliable.

Otherwise, it seems that there will be no clear ‘bolter’ in the squad, with the only outsider getting into the news being Lourens Adriaanse, who has been involved before, so it is nothing really new.

The team announcement takes place later this afternoon, so we will have to wait and see who is in, who misses out and who is there that really shouldn’t be.

  • Going to be interesting, The Ginger should go instead of Guthro. Plenty of great youngsters around, no need to take older foreign player with similar(or less) skill.

  • HM would truly go wrong for not giving McLeod and PSDT a chance to show their potential.
The RWC should not be our only goal. Constantly beating the AB should be a priority. Not just a personal success record of a coach.
Choose wisely HM. Saturday again proved a team of passion beats a good contracted bunch anytime.

    Agree on Kitshoff.

Marcell must surely have earned some game time too. My dark horses would be Marnitz Boshoff and SP Marais. I reckon North will kick on next season.

  • Rumours Ive picked up on is that, Adriaanse, F Steyn, F du Preez and vd Merwe will not be selected.

What does Kockett’s contract status look like, cant we get him back at the Sharks?

  • If Bakkies is picked an the locks are Eben,Bakkies,PSDT and Franco VD Merwe I would be happy. Coetzee outplayed Kolisi but Kolisi and Arno Botha are favourites so they will tour along with Vermeulen,Alberts and Louw. DuPreez and Pienaar will be the 9s, possibly with Vermaak. Steyn,Lambie and Goosen will be the 10s. DeVilliers,Steyn,Serfontein and Engelbrecht the centres. Wings and fullback and utility players could be a gamble.

  • On second thoughts, the Rand/Euro exchange isnt so great. So instead of flying 30 players to Europe why not just pick a full european based side and only fly the 3 coaches over? Now that would make financial sense. haha

  • First off, congrats on the win – my picks yet again spot on! (Well in my special way).

Second, I can only say what I have said before, Kockett will NOT be picked for a Bok debut while he is still in Europe. They will not cap players for the first time who are based overseas.

Thanks for the input. Do you think all three scrummies will be from overseas? In other words, du Preez, Pienaar and Vermaak?

  • @Uli (Comment 14) : There has been an upward curve in the Boks BUT I still have my doubts and always will with Heineken until the day he proves that he picks the proper players rather than being faithful to those of the blou.

We came in second in the Rugby Championship but Australia this year were a hell of a lot worse than last year and that is our only real improvement – we beat Australia twice rather than the once of last year.

The time was perfect at the end of the Rugby Championship to select PSDT as locking partner to Eben but rather he decided to go with his old blou buddy, Juandre. The lineouts and kick-offs were our real achilles heel(alongside defence)and that would have been something easily remedied with PSDT there rather than bloues.

Kirchner was playing horribly all night but rather put out the crook and yank him off he kept that bloues out there until he had absolutely f**ked up our chances of winning the game.

Added to which the fact that he subbed our whole front row which was dominating the ABs with the try line at their mercy and it all adds up to someone who is out of his depth and repaying old loyalties rather than innovating and leading.

  • @Butchie34 (Comment 21) : Yes I agree with allot you have said, but surely we need to also extend our squad and see who can actually make the step up? I think the AB game reached HM a few things, not just that he shouldn’t change the front row when he didn’t need too, but that his backups to his no1 front row is pretty terrible.

I much rather have these mistakes now, and HM have a much better feel of whats going on and how good his team is really before the WC.

  • @robdylan (Comment 30) :

Since McLeod is 29 I would get if he didn’t get a call-up and since Cobus was pushing the starting position at the Sharks all Currie Cup and Super Rugby season, I would say he is the best young scrummy to consider. Also Reinach actually had an excellent 20 minutes in the final. His kicking and tactical game was just as perfect as McLeod’s, only in a much diffirent match situation.

  • @Uli (Comment 34) : I agree that we need to expand our pool and grow the talent available for the Boks. The problem is that you are not going to grow that by selecting the same guys for the end of year and guys who aren’t playing in South Africa.

HM thinks that Coenie is a TH but let’s be honest Coenie is not an international TH and shouldn’t be groomed at international level to be a TH. He needs to go back to his franchise and get them to groom him as a TH. After all John Smit didn’t get made into a hooker playing for the Boks, the Sharks converted him first. He rather needs to take Lourens Adriaanse and let the guy play.

Selecting Bakkies Botha is similarly an exercise in futility. He has had his time in the Boks and chose to go to France… same goes with Juandre Kruger.
