Rumblings from behind the scenes

The Currie Cup expansion is back on the SARU table.

Last we reported was that there was to be a potential re-vote on the expansion of the Currie Cup, to include the Pumas and Kings into the current six teams. Since then though, Griquas have been relegated and the Pumas are already guaranteed Currie Cup Premier Division rugby next year.

According to a report on Sport24 this morning, Oregan Hoskins is confident that the re-vote set to happen in December, will see the Currie Cup expanded to include the Kings and the newly relegated Griquas.

It seems that the problem is more about money, than it is about adding two new teams to the Premier Division.

The smaller Unions are unhappy about how the money is split between the 14 unions. At this stage, the majority of the money goes towards the bigger unions, as can be expected. But the lack of money in the smaller unions is causing them to lose out on players, as players move after the money, and would rather sit on the bench or just be a fringe player at a bigger union, than staying at a small union.

Hoskins was quoted as saying that the smaller unions have had substantial increases in their grants over the last few years, and that this is part of the reason so many players are heading overseas. As the smaller unions receive more money, the bigger unions are unable to pay all their Springboks, and this has led to an exodus of players going overseas.

If this problem is not fixed over the next few years, we can all just imagine the state our rugby will be in. Let’s hope this December meeting can not only sort out some of the problems within South African Rugby, but that sense prevails and all unions can move in a similar direction. That direction should be to make South African Rugby the best in the world.

  • The best solution. Keep Currie Cup Premier to 6 teams- strength vs strength is always the best solution- always! Scrap the Vodacom Cup- nobody cares about it…nobody watches it so scrap it. Use the money from the Vodacom Cup to create a better Currie Cup 1st Division -to be played after Varsity Cup and during Super Rugby. Then allow players to be drafted from Currie Cup 1st Div teams into Currie Cup Prem teams as required. There is no promo relegation game rather straight relegation and promotion thus giving the weaker teams a chance each year to play in Premier Division.

  • @vanmartin (Comment 6) : Unfortunately when you have the massive ego of Unions presidents at play there is never a simple solution for the benefit of SA Rugby. They all want whats only best for them and their salaries.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 4) : so if Bulls ended 6th they would have played ist division? Second problem for me is how will the Super rugby teams keep their reserves mach fit to replace injured players or test players returning from injury during this time if they don’t play any rugby?
