Dream Bok?

Since the rugby season is drawing to a close I thought it would be interesting to take a look at the players on display in the upcoming tests and ask Santa for a gift for the Boks. It’ll never happen due to the IRB regulations but wouldn’t it be amazing to select a player from another country’s squad and put him in a Bok jersey?

Where would we start and who would we pick? Kieran Read? Leigh Halfpenny? Richie McCaw? Dan Carter? Those are the current superstars of rugby based on performances this year and experience but would they be your choice? When we look at some of the lower-ranked teams there are some amazing players there who may shine more brightly on the international stage if only they were born in another country.

The names that come to mind are Sergio Parisse, Martin Castrogiavanni, Richie Gray, Kahn Fotuali’I, Dave Denton to name but a few.

If you could pick any one player to join the Boks who would it be and why?

  • Since I think Read was the difference between the AB winning and losing against both us and england this year….he’s the ONE!!!!

  • McCaw and carter was not that impressive this year, so they can keep those two. Still rate Will Genia though. Nr13 is thin everywhere, maybe jonathan davies of wales…..

  • Given that we lost du Preez for tomorrow, it would be nice to have Genia step in.

  • As one the best players in the world go, I’d go for Reid, for any other side than SA.

But we have enough loosies. In that respect, if i had to choose a player to complement the current Bok side, it would have to be Genia or Nonu. But a younger Nonu.

I think he would be quite destrcutive and give us a bit more flair and surprise in the midfield.

  • @VinChainSaw (Comment 7) : Nonu flair?? That’s pushing it. He just a big crashball senter, a bigger and better version of wynand olivier……lol. But that said, w olivier got the bulls over the advantage line everytime and it made his loosies go forward time and again. But rather be good at one thing than a jack of all trades. So yes nonu will probably fit in with our type of game……

  • Aaron Cruden – but only if I am allowed to pair him with Aaron Smith.

I know the Boks play from 9, but I would love to see the Boks play with the 10 calling the shots.

BTW FdP was by far the best Bok 9 this year, but I am worried in that we have no backup that can get close to emulating his way of play

  • @KingsArmy (Comment 8) :

Lol. Yes flair is maybe pushing it a bit.

He just makes a lot of line breaks AND has an offload.
Our guys – jdv specifically – tend to go to ground more.

No stats to back this up – just a feeling – but then this a theoretical exercise. And im too lazy to try the stats.

  • @VinChainSaw (Comment 10) : I also recall a very good kick from him (chased well by Smith) that set up the lineout from the All Blacks scored.

The only problem is you are going to be playing with 14 men a lot as refs will not be scared to card him for his shoulder charges when not playing in a black jersey
