In an interview with the Sharks website, new Director of Rugby Jake White has laid out how the available duties will be divided between his various assistant coaches.

New coach Paul Anthony, who led the Bulls under 19 side to another trophy this year, has been appointed forwards coach, with the man who fulfilled that role during the Currie Cup, Brad Macleod-Henderson, concentrating on technical analysis, breakdown work and individual skills. Sean Everitt will continue as backline coach, while White himself will focus on defence, while also overseeing the entire coaching system.

White has also confirmed that additional specialist coaches may be brought in as and when required, to up-skill the team he has in place. Kicking, line-outs and scrums are just some of the areas White has mentioned that may need additional emphasis.

The coach has also, unequivocally told the players what their goal for the coming season is: “I have told them they are going to win Super Rugby”.

Meanwhile, in another interview given to Sbu Mjikeliso from Sport Live, White has confirmed in no uncertain terms that he sees Pat Lambie as a flyhalf – and only a flyhalf.

“Pat Lambie is going to play at No 10, that’s it,” White told the website. “He is not going to play anywhere else for the Sharks except at flyhalf.”

  • I have always liked the way Jake does things. I haven’t always agreed with his player choices, but never felt he was sending a confusing message. It was always clear what his plan was with the Boks even when people didn’t always agree with the way he did things and the players he chose.

Having him coach the Sharks is like a dream come true for me. Seriously, I never thought this would actually happen. I rate him as the best coach in world rugby.

  • Was’nt Anthony originally brought in as someone that would take control of the age group squads?

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 8) : no. That was widely assumed, but never stated by anyone at the Sharks.

To my mind, anyway, it’s always been clear that Anthony would play a role with the senior side.

  • @vanmartin (Comment 6) : I think Venter did a good job of empowering him during the Currie Cup, but that doesn’t mean he’s absolutely ready for the same role in Super Rugby. I believe in the philosophy that if you give someone responsibility they rise to it, but I think this role could be good for him.

Very glad to hear Jake’s views on Lambie, that’s a huge relief. Someone needed to be decisive, and it seems as though Jake has.

It will be cool to see the likes of John Mitchell floating in and out of the setup as and when needed…

  • Great. It’s down to business and no nonsense business at last.HM got told off there with Mr.Lambie’s future. A season of Super Rugby at 10 and he’ll be as polished as he need to be for the Boks.

  • @MerckZ (Comment 15) : Should be Bissie. I hope it will keep his brainfarts in check. He seems like the other guys will follow him in battle. My other candidate is Jacques Botes but I don’t see him as a starter next year, same with Keegan. PSdT is still too young but I remember Jake causing controvercy when he selected Ben Mowan at the Brumbies and it worked out well.

  • I also think Bismarck will be Captain of the Sharks. I think he should be Springbok Captain too ( When JDV is no longer part of the plans.)

I’m also ecstatic that Jake is so adamant that Lambie will be No 10 AND ONLY No 10. That was a huge message to HM!

If Bismarck is Captain that will be another message for HM.

I miss Plum – but I must say, things truly seem to picking up in the right direction!

  • @denese.newby@gmail.com (Comment 24) : Heh. I’m not sure HM needs an additional message. When Bismarck is on the field he is clearly in charge of the forwards. Against Wales when ever there was a break he was the one talking and the rest were listening.

  • @robdylan (Comment 27) : Yes, that’s him. Our defense improved big time during the CC. We even started seeing big hits again, just also great to see guys getting on their feet quickly after making a tackle to ensure that the holes were closed. He also did a great job with the Kings’ defense.

  • To be honest I’m glad Lambie has a sure future in the 10 jersey. However, if need be, I wouldn’t mind seeing him at 12 again (not permanently). He was great there against the Bulls in SR.
