  • Great and committed defensive effort from both sides this evening. Thought Ruan got a bit overwhelmed at times but probably executed the gameplan well enough. His confidence-based play is an ongoing concern. Le Roux is just growing in leaps and bounds as a more and more well rounded fullback. Loved the timing of our forwards in the tackle and breakdowns. The Bok coaching staff are adding an extra dimension to our loosies play in this area. Thought Coenie Oosthuizen had a surprisingly decent innings?

Congrats to Lourens on his cap this evening! Well done to the Bokke on a succesful tour!

  • Good game by the Boks. With all the returnees we look a much more complete side.

Still seems to be some issues with our back line and game plan, ideally we want to see our wings bought into the game more often and we want to see our forwards less in the first receiver channel.

Before the Steyn lovers try plaster over his poor performance by saying he kicked well I am going to weigh in here with my 2 cents; the guy was poor, defensively not bad but he couldn’t catch or pass a ball today it seemed. He missed a few kicks out of hand too.

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 59) :

BH – the concept of ‘downward pressure’ was removed from the law books several years ago.

Touch ball, ball touching ground is now enough as I understand it.

It was the other disallowed try that had me scratching my head. Need to look at it again, but I couldn’t see how that went forward from Steyn.
Was watching in a bar so could be wrong.

  • @VinChainSaw (Comment 62) : Was not aware of that – always learning something new.

It looked to me that the ball did land marginally forward from the point of where his hand touched it. Because he keeps on running, that point does end up behind him.

I know that in the case of a pass they do take into account your forward momentum as long as the ball does not leave your hands in a forward direction. The ball will end up forward from the point where you passed it due to inheriting your forward velocity, but since you passed it sideways it is not ruled as forward.

However since this was clearly not a pass, I assume that ruling does not apply in this case.

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 59) : Control and downward pressure does not need to be demonstrated when ‘killing’ the ball. You simply have to touch while the ball is touching the ground. It was a pretty close thing timing-wise but I’d also want the benefit of the doubt on defence.

Steyn’s ‘knock-pass’ seem legit but the camera shot was very wide and I could be wrong on the direction of his hands. The tv director had some interesting ideas for creative shots and not all of them panned out in my opinion.

  • Firstly I thought the Boks were way better than the French and only the ref and field brought some parity to the game and scoreline. Having said that the Boks need to improve their discipline. We cannot afford a yellow card every game and our penalty count is crazy! Look at the Irish discipline last nite- thats what we need to achieve. I think the IRB need to hand out heavy sanctions to European teams that produce fields like that- its unacceptable. My only concern from a Bok point of view is that our bench players seem to take a while to get into the game, Bakkies excluded. Do they perhaps not warm up enough before coming on? I know sometimes its not a planned substitution but when it is planned surely they should be fully warm and rearing to go. Just seems they take a while to get going and especially our hooker replacement seems to always miss his first 1 or 2 lineouts. But overall very happy with the Boks, even the ‘old’ men.

  • Players that have disappointed me on this EOYT are Ruan Pienaar and Jacques Fourie.

Ruan really isn’t anywhere near the class of Fourie DuPreez… it really is quite a worry. I wonder if Hougaard will find his old form this season?

Jacques Fourie didn’t really blow me away… and I found myself wondering whether he is really any better than JJ Engelbrecht and Jan Serfontein?

If Jan really is the boy wonder everyone makes him out to be, would it not be better shifting Jean to 13 to accomodate Jan, or how about trying Jan at 13?

Who makes a better 13… Jan or JJ?

  • @CS (Comment 78) : Its not just Flo,i think the Boks average a yellow card a game in 2013. my stats arent 100% accurate but i think its pretty close. And we also give away silly penalties at the breakdown and at scrum time. I mean if the ref says hands off then leave the damn ball, just cs you think you right doesnt mean the ref will agree with you. Same at scrum time, the ref will tell the scrummie when to put the ball in- if you do it before then you know you will be penalised so its stupid mistakes. Coenie scrums in every single scrum- we should have been penalised a lot more in that area. He knows he has to scrum straight so just do it. The Boks seem to either think they above the law sometimes or are just plain stupid. If we cut out these silly things we will be extremely tough to beat.

  • @CS (Comment 79) : The Bok backline defense looked a lot better with Jacques Fourie than it has with JJ and Jan so if I was HM I also would have played him there. Yes he isnt as quick as JJ but his defense is a lot better. Defense has to be a premium in international rugby. Especially as the Boks play a forward dominated attacking game. If the 13 gets the ball 5 times a game to attack its a lot but he will be called on to defend a lot. So before we execute Fourie lets rather think how the Boks play.

  • @CS (Comment 77) : Habana milked that tackle for all its worth.

  • @rhineshark (Comment 82) : That tackle was way late and he dropped Habana on his neck / head. That was not accidental. There was no need to lift his legs up above his hips.

Anyway the rule now says if you take the guy past the horizontal – you responsible for bringing him down safely. He did not – so yellow card. Nothing to do with Habana’s reaction.

Habana arched his back, which made it look much worse than it was. I mean, he could have easily braced, in stead of arching his back – he tried to milk that tackle (imo). It was late, so maybe Habana wasn’t ready, but watch it again – it seems as though Habana arches his back and puts his head backwards.

  • @Letgo (Comment 84) : I watched it a few times last night… I’ll watch it again tonight… but if he did that on purpose then he’s stupid because he landed extremely dangerously.

Or don’t you agree that the landing was dangerous?

  • @Letgo (Comment 84) : He was caught completely unawares by the tackle – it was way after he passed the ball, and he did not even see the guy coming.

I agree with that, but I still thought Habana arched his back once he realised the hit came in.

  • @CS (Comment 85) :

I might be completely off here, but I thought it looked dangerous because of the way Habana arched his back. The guy was bringing him down pretty slowly, he knew where the ground was and put his head back.

I’ve never seen a player tipped that doesn’t attempt to brace, by crouching forward. Habana didn’t do this, he clearly arched his back. Even if you’re caught of guard, wouldn’t your reaction be, brace and not arch?

I didn’t see an effort from Habana to protect himself, but rather when he realised the tackle came in late and he was being picked up, to make it look worse than it was.

I would have given a penalty for that tackle.

So glad HM understands and accepts his place in the pecking order….

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 83) : I agree with the card. The tackle was late and he lifted the player through the horisontal. However, as others have mentioned here, Habana’s falling action looked completely unnatural.

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 59) : Explanation from rugby365:

    Law 22.1 GROUNDING THE BALL
There are two ways a player can ground the ball:
    (a) Player touches the ground with the ball. A player grounds the ball by holding the ball and touching the ground with it, in in-goal. ‘Holding’ means holding in the hand or hands, or in the arm or arms. No downward pressure is required.
    (b) Player presses down on the ball. A player grounds the ball when it is on the ground in the in-goal and the player presses down on it with a hand or hands, arm or arms, or the front of the player’s body from waist to neck inclusive.

A player holding the ball is not required to put downward pressure on the ball.

A player not holding the ball is required to put downward pressure on the ball.
Huguet is certainly not carrying the ball, and so (b) above tells us what he has to do.
And it tells us that Huguet is required to press down on the ball.,
Huguet’s hand touched the side of the ball. There is no sign of downward pressure at all. The one who puts downward pressure on the ball is Louw, who puts both hands and his torso on the ball, certainly exerting downward pressure.
That says that Huguet did not ground the ball.

    Louw grounded the ball.
The try should have been awarded.
