Etzebeth set for surgery

It was confirmed yesterday that Stormers and Bok lock Eben Etzebeth faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines after injuring his ankle during the national side’s recent Parish triumph over France.

It seems that counting isn’t a strong suit down in the Cape, with reports as to the duration of his lay-off varying widely. What is agreed, though, is that big Eben requires surgery to fix the injury and will definitely miss a reasonable chunk of the 2014 Super Rugby campaign, if not the whole thing.

The player himself seems to think he’ll be out of action for around six months – the Stormers reckon it will be more like four.

Whatever the case, we’re hoping all goes well with his op and his rehab.

  • This is sad news, those pitches in Europe was awful. Yesterday on Boots & All Skinstad suggested that Etzebeth might have a case to sue.

  • Hopefully the Stormers don’t bring him back to early, they’ve been known to do this with their big players. Give the guy a decent rest. Let him heal up properly.

  • This may be a good thing in the long run. A young immature body needs an extended break to make it last longer in the long run – does not matter how strong and tough it is.

  • @West Indies Cricket Board (Comment 8) : Not to sure about that. Yes eben is a great player, but ur nr4 lock is one of ur easier players to replace. Strms bought in an argt lock and they got elstadt, fuzani and more. Hate to say it, but think allister is there to stay and then unto the bok coach…..

  • Good when fit, but must be a bit soft to get injured so often.

  • In a position where we have a lot of able substitutes dying to get international exposure.

Come on Vinnie – look at his (non-)playing history.

He isn’t be the first hard man whose body couldn’t match up to his appetite for contact.

Might work out better as a kind of super-sub covering both lock positions. The reduced playing time demands will be beneficial given his susceptibility to injury.

    Try fresh bait fella.

Etsebeth has played every Bok game since his debut – 23 caps on the trot I believe.
Maybe youre confusing him with Pieter-Steph that hardly played this year?

    Don’t shot the messenger bud.

Not only will you miss the point, but you’re not gonna inflict any damage either.

EE is a talented youngster, but his playing time speaks for itself. Let’s be honest – he seriously injured his foot jogging on a field that everyone else managed on just fine.

  • @Big Fish (Comment 16) :

Still using the same bait… read my lips… 23 games for the Boks on the trot. Every game since debut over two seasons.
Played more Bok minutes than anybody else… yet you want to call him frail?

  • @Letgo (Comment 1) : I sometimes think that Skinstad would have a case suing Hilton College, but then on the other hand they could have just as big a case to sue him.

  • @VinChainSaw (Comment 18) : Nah man, I agree with fish.

The guy doesn’t play with half the physicality of Albert’s and manages to get hurt as often as he does. Bakkies and PSDT will be the lock pairing at the next world cup with EE coming off the bench.
