Jake’s “9-to-5″ Sharks

“Working nine to five what a way to make a living,” reckons Dolly Parton…. well, she might not like it, but for Jake White’s Sharks of 2014, putting in those sorts of hours are seen as the key to success in Super Rugby and beyond.

In fact, according to our information, Jake has the Sharks starting well before even Ms Parton has managed to haul her sizable assets out of bed, with 7am being the time at which their day starts. Taking to ECR’s Alain Tardin last week, White had revealed that “as professional athletes the players need to treat their job as any other person in the working world would”. While the Sharks of the past have enjoyed somewhat of a more “flexible” schedule, with little structure to their day outside of formal training and gym sessions, Jake White’s era seems set to be built very strongly on a platform of hard work and putting in the necessary hours.

The Director maintains that with other teams in Super Rugby already having this sort of strict schedule in place, to not follow suit would put the Sharks at a clear disadvantage.

I’ve got to say I like the sound of what Jake is trying to do here; the Sharks have never wanted for talent in recent years but have often fallen short due to the lack of “finishing touches”. The more time the team spends together, honing their art under the watchful eye of their coaches, the more likely it is that any latent weaknesses can be worked out over time.

White has apparently also identified pace as an area of the Sharks’ game that needs work, telling Tardin the team “needs a bit more pace, which is why they have recently started a 5-week programme to improve on the side’s speed.”

You can read the full report here.

  • 100% Jake White! These guys have all the talent but need to work on being good professionals. I think this is more of what John Smit wanted when he appointed Jake. He was more concerned with the structures off the field than on it that would be put in place.

  • The ship is tightening up! If this is an improvement on their currie cup final where they were first at the breakdown and their kick chase was quick, they will be phenomenal. The Sharks were starting to look more like their NZ counterparts in that game so 2014 is really looking exciting. With Smitty going all out to fill the stands we really are in for a glorious season. (sic)

  • World class coach implementing his long term sustainable plan for the Sharks. I cannot wait to see the results ! The players will ultimately be the biggest beneficiaries, fitter, stronger , faster, more skilled …… The team spirit will improve immensely if they spend so much time together. When do they announce the S15 squad for next year ?

  • @Caratacus (Comment 4) : Sry to disappoint, but the sharks in 2013 cc final was pure bulls rugby…..big, aggressive forwards with some great kicking. Don’t take that as a insult, they got three superrugby trophies to show for it. With the sharks great pack and jwhite they should get their hands on a trofy within the next two years. If not they should break the bank and get bventer back!

  • @Tintin (Comment 14) : That’s exactly my point….there’s only two types of rugby: winning rugby and losing rugby. Too many people complain about the bulls if they lost that they didn’t have a plan B, and they right, the bulls walk onto the field with one gameplan and it either work or it doesn’t. Jwhite loves his structure and it will be good for the sharks.

  • @West Indies Cricket Board (Comment 17) : yes its strange….maybe its the strms low scoring, defensive gameplan. With demitri the strms are a save bet to make the play-offs, but low scoring means not a lot of bonus points, which means an away play-off game possibly…

  • @West Indies Cricket Board (Comment 17) : the one thing that stands out from the bulls three trophies was that all was played in SA. Which means u have to end in the top two, possibly first. Need bonus points to do that. The problem for the sharks is that in the beginning of s15 in durbs theirs lots of humidity and the ball is slippery, making 4tries difficult….

  • Reminds me of 1995 (or what I’ve heard about it seeing as I wasn’t alive) when the Boks were supposedly not the most talented team but by far the fittest. Joost called them “superfit”. This time though, we definitely have the talent to go with it.

  • @KingsArmy (Comment 30) :Lol I proposed the Springbok played “total Rugby” which involved kicking, I’ve never called for a Lions like approach.

Just for future reference my ideal Rugby is what the Sharks played in 2012 SR, combined with a Stormers like defense; coincidentally, the type of game the Irish, of all people, almost beat the All Blacks with this year. On that point, does it not perplex you that with all our talent we could not manage to do what the English have and what the Irish nearly did(they came closer than we did)?

  • @50shadesofblackandwhite (Comment 27) : I agree with the fortress thing, that’s a given. Just think that top of the log is so much better, u do need some bp for that. With the high humidity early in the comp keeping it close to the sharks great pack of forwards can just work for them, can always open up abit more as comp go’s on

  • @KingsArmy (Comment 34) : You have a very broad perception of what Bulls “our” Rugby is. Now is the most accurately I have seen it implemented(With Meyer), and we have yet to see the Boks beat the All Blacks with it.

You need to open your eyes. You need to stop thinking of ours, us and them and learn to identify what is effective and what isn’t. Release the dogma, be young at heart grasshopper

  • Are you not tired of chasing the All Blacks? What is it they do that makes them so successful? People like KingsArmy will tell you we simply just don’t have the players with the ability to mimic and surpass them :???: We do, they just never get the opportunities.

The thing is, they have, out of necessity, learnt to play a variety of styles to combat any team they come across. Why do we refuse to do the same?
