White chats to the Daily News

Intrepid newshound Craig Lewis of the Daily News has managed to corner new Sharks Director of Rugby, Jake White, for a Q&A session.

A lot of what is said by White had been revealed before, but it’s good to see that he’s firmly sticking to his guns about work ethic and about Pat Lambie only playing flyhalf.

What is very interesting, though, are Jake’s views on squad depth and the perceived “pecking order” within the squad.

  • Great article but would still love to know whether White plans to continue you on with a rotational policy.

  • @Dunx (Comment 2) : sorry, maybe I’m being unduly harsh here.

Are you not aware of the fact that Oosthuizen has signed for the Sharks and is currently in pre-season training with the squad?

It’s possible that I might not have actually confirmed this in an article (although I’m pretty sure I did)

  • Wonder if jw is alluding to more players being drafted into the sharks squad ?
Agree that competition is good and the more talented players the sharks can get,the better.make the jersey something worth earning and cherishing each and every game you get to wear it.

  • @Talent (Comment 17) : Hey I dont know, more and more school boys are going straight from school into professional teams. Top school boy rugby is pretty much professional and these guys are getting pumped full of supplements and gym which is why they can make the easy transition after school. Id love someone to compare the pack weights of the top 5 school boy sides with that of Currie Cup packs…

  • @SheldonK (Comment 18) : Ye, in my first year out of school I played a bit of social Rugby and we would play various schools 1st sides- as a 19 year old you would have considered them big but a year later, and 9kg’s heavier, not so much. The body between 18-22 develops enormously.

  • @gregkaos (Comment 23) : @Talent (Comment 26) :

Lying on the ground and popping up the ball to the next guy isnt really what i would consider passing.

That said, looking a bit further into the clip, he does get a few passes away. I just got too bored of seeing him run into players and didnt finish watching.

  • I watched the whole clip. He does eventually pass the ball. Looks like he’s a good ball carrier. Pity he is going to WP academy but he probably lives in Capetown with his Mom. Is Jake not quite newly married – ie in the last 6 years?

Who knows – Wesley White might still play for The Sharks. Not all Sharks Academy guys stay at The Sharks.

  • @vanmartin (Comment 1) : I would really like to know this too. I trawled through a couple past interviews with Jake on various site and quite surprised that I could not find anything… no one seems to have thrown the question to him.

I, for one, really hope the rotation policy is here to stay. Doubt many would argue that it wasn’t a success. If Jake is successful in turning the Sharks into the fittest side in the competition, and players get additional rest through the marathon season…

My 2 main questions are about rotation and captaincy.
