Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium’s three year deal to host the South African leg of the HSBC Sevens World Series came to a fitting end when South Africa beat New Zealand in the Cup Final. For two years New Zealand have enjoyed the favour of their Port Elizabeth based support as they beat South Africa in 2011 and France in 2012.

Both teams had a fairly easy run to the play-offs as both topped their respective logs. Kenya gave New Zealand a good go in their quarter final as New Zealand only managed to score their first try just before the half time hooter, final score 19 – 0. South Africa went on to play Portugal, beating them 45 – 0 in a 7 try trashing, with Justin Geduld and Werner Kok scoring two a piece.

New Zealand played Samoa in their semi-final, running in 3 tries to 1 beating them 19 – 5. South Africa’s semi-final against Argentina they managed another clean slate running in 5 tries, final score ending 31 – 0.

South Africa had all the motivation to win the final, playing at the iconic Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium and a good 30 000 plus crowd behind them. It was, however New Zealand that gave their supporters something to cheer about when Scott Curry scored his teams first try. Sherwin Stowers scored his teams second try as New Zealand took a 14 point lead. Branco du Preez took South Africa within two points with two late tries as the teams entered the half time break, 14 – 12 in favour of New Zealand. The South African captain, Kyle Brown, scored his teams winning try in the closing minutes taking the final score to 17 – 12.

“This is a special win and we cannot thank the crowd enough for their support. It was also important for us to keep improving and following our fourth place at the Gold Coast and second spot in Dubai, a win here justified the hard work the squad has put into training,” said South African captain Kyle Brown.

Third Place: Samoa
Plate Winners: Fiji
Bowl Winners: England
Shield Winners: Scotland

Latest Standings:
New Zealand (58)
South Africa (56)
Fiji (48)

  • @vanmartin (Comment 1) : it was an amazing game and atmosphere, it just shows put any team under pressure and the game is half won, then you just need to score the points

  • @pierre_mackie (Comment 2) : I watched the highlights in the gym this morning and it looked fantastic. I can only imagine how the significance of playing at the Nelson Mandela Bay stadium so shortly after his passing impacted the event.

  • How do you guys think the Olympics will work? Will we send our normal sevens side, or load it with Vermeulens Steyns and JPPs?

  • @West Indies Cricket Board (Comment 7) : Sevens is quite specialised these days, not just a matter of adding players and off you go.

There might be a few additions, but they’ll need to train and play within the sevens setup well before the olympics.

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 11) : hugely disappointing, still cant get over the fact that 1st div unions can determine the growth/expansion of the premier div, and that SARU the governing body cant over rule the decisions.
It will only take Griquas a season or two to be in the same scenario as Boland/SWD struggling to get jersey sponsor. Yes the Kings lost to the Lions in the pro/releg for SR and yes they lost to Pumas in the final and against Cheetahs last year in pro/releg for pre div, but theyve should by putting them in a higher level and more experienced players they can compete, you only better your game when you play against the best

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 11) : this is prob the best EP will get, no player wants to play 1st div rugby, juniors will come through only to leave the province at senior level to further their careers elsewhere, we have seen it for years, EP had good structure in place for the last 3 years and now they have to rebuild all over again

  • @pierre_mackie (Comment 12) : When I heard that they were going to revisit the issue and vote on it again I thought that some horse trading had been done behind the scenes and that it would be a formality that the small unions would vote for the expansion – how wrong could I be, they did not even meet to take a vote, realising that nothing had changed. It wmust be hugely disappointing for EP and Griqua rugby, players and fans. I wonder if Sergeal Petersen will be able to get a release from the Kings to play at another franchise if they wanted him.

  • It is a difficult one and I think the bigger unions are anti it because it will mean more games if a double header season is still played. With the Super Rugby, Vodacom Cup, Currie Cup and Tests probaly too much rugby for them. I do think as a compromise they should increase it to 7 teams leaving both A & B div with 7 teams each. The Kiwis manage it so we should be able to. Then the problem will be who goes up Griquas or EP Kings.

  • ITM Cup, in my opinion, is a good model. 14 teams, two divisions of seven teams each. Each team playes the other six in their own division once, and four teams from the other division once. Total of 10 games, same as the premier currie cup teams played this year.
No promo/relegation games, top team in bottom division goes up, bottom team in top division goes down.

  • @pierre_mackie (Comment 21) : Yep, thats how I undersatnd it too, its actually the teams that would have a more attainable target of getting premier league exposure that voted against it. Why?

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 22) : Maybe we don’t understand everything, but it doesn’t make sense!!! The top team of Bdiv has to play the 6th best team to get into Adiv [yes Pumas has done it this year, but it wasn't easy]; instead a 6/8 split will allow the top team of Bdiv to play the 8th best team which is a lot easier.

  • U wonder why the smaller unions would make the path into topflite rugby more difficult instead of easier. What would they rather have to do……beating the 6th or 8th strongest team in cc?? Get the feeling some small unions don’t have aspirations to move up to cc Adiv, so they wonna keep more teams down with them…..

  • @robdylan (Comment 17) : so it’s between stormers and sharks.personally,i hope the sharks can get sergeal for sr14.
Jw mentioned if there is perhaps a 3rd choice wing at the sharks,he might be asked to learn to play in the outside centre position.could this perhaps mean a player like sbura sithole?or was it just a general comment?referring to the article in the daily news.

  • @50shadesofblackandwhite (Comment 27) : In an interview, Jake White mentioned that he would consider playing people in a different position they are used to. As an example, he said if he had a wing that was not making it into the match 23 regularly as a wing, but would be useful to the Sharks as an outside center, he would not hesitate to play him there. It was only an example he used to express his willingness to consider players outside their normal positions.

  • With Fransie, Whitehead, Jordaan and Williams, the Sharks are strong and deep at Centre. No reason to play a wing out of position there at this point, but who knows with injuries.

  • @robdylan (Comment 26) : They certainly do appear to be voting against their own best interests. Looking at the unions that voted against it though, they are the unions that see them selves as having the least chance of making the step up. There does appear to be some “dragging others down with us” going on.

  • @Dancing Bear (Comment 30) : @robdylan (Comment 31) : they said theres no interest in the 1st div, maybe they see it as if Kings play in the Pre Div they wont have an opportunity to play at a world class venue, and im sure PE pulls the biggest crowd compared to other 1st div venues
