SA Rugby have confirmed the nominees for their various Player of the Year awards, with young Sharks sharpshooter Fred Zeilinga named as a finalist in two categories.

Zeilinga, who made his senior Currie Cup debut this season, only turned 21 yesterday, but has nevertheless managed to secure a nomination as 2013 Currie Cup Player of the Year. As the top points scorer in the Vodacom Cup this year, he is also justifiably nominated for the award in that competition. He’ll face stiff competition in both cases; Lions flyhalf Marnitz Boshoff was superb in the Vodacom Cup, while try-scoring ace (and former Shark) Rosco Speckman seems sure to pick up a gong somewhere along the way, after winning about 23 separate prizes at the Pumas prize-giving. In the Currie Cup division, Zeilinga is up against a pair of Western Province stalwarts in Scarra Ntubeni and Cheslin Kolbe, with the former the heavy favourite to win the prize.

The Sharks’ run to the Currie Cup trophy this year sees them nominated for Team of the Year, where they come up against the formidable Pumas (who had a superb season) and the Springboks. The Coach of the Year sees, perhaps fittingly, the men responsible for all of the nominated teams in the running; Brendan Venter, Jimmy Stonehouse and Heyneke Meyer. Pieter-Steph du Toit is fittingly among the nominees for Young Player of the Year, again in a category that contains stiff opposition, including fellow Boks Eben Etzebeth, Jan Serfontein and Siya Kolisi.

The most coveted award, though, is that of Player of the Year. In a hugely tough field, Sharks fans will be backing our stalwart, Bismarck du Plessis – he comes up against four fellow Springboks in Jean de Villiers, Willie le Roux, Eben Etzebeth and Duane Vermeulen, any of whom would be worthy winners of the prize too after the 2013 that they’ve had.

The winners will be announced at Gold Reef City on 12 February 2014.

  • In all honesty, the main awards should be a Sharks clean-sweep; Bismarck, PSdT, The Sharks, Brendan Venter. It won’t be the case, there’s such a Cape bias. Fred will also definitely lose out to Kolbe or Ntubeni…

  • @MerckZ (Comment 5) : Come on, I know ur a sharks fan, but not everything starts and end with the sharks. Cc final was a great win[8th in S15], but so was the pumas win. Bokke only lost against AB,sharks lost against griekwas. HM got a 80+% record at international level. Not saying sharks won’t win a couple, but its far from a clean sweep.

  • Eben was also great at intl level; psdt was great at cc level. Kolbe had a lot of people talking; Fred had only shark fans talking. Think bissie is ur best chance, unless the springbok captain takes it. And why wasn’t Spies nominated for anything!!!! Lol!

  • @KingsArmy (Comment 7) : I’m not a blinkered Sharks fan; the reason I say it should be a clean sweep is mainly because the Sharks Currie Cup team was the only one to earn any silverware – it sends a message to the Boks of “not beating the All Blacks is good enough” if we give them TotY, as good as they were.

The same applies to HM – give him the award when he brings the Rugby Championship home next year. BV spent a short time at the Sharks and worked wonders in that time; losing to the Kwas in the first round only goes to highlight why he deserves the award. Further, PSdT is the most exciting young Bok prospect, so he deserves that.

Player of the Year is a much tighter call; with Willie, Eben & Bismarck all strong contenders. I hope it’s Willie, to be honest. That said, I don’t think Bismarck has received it (and Eben got it last year?), so I think Bissie deserves it – he’s world class. If he was a Kiwi, the IRB & the NH would be falling over themselves to give him as many accolades as possible.

  • @MerckZ (Comment 10) : look its gonna be tuff in most of those categories. I think they gonna look at more than just trophies. Yip bosvark is worldclass. Got the two best hookers in the world!

  • @KingsArmy (Comment 11) : When it’s close like this you have to look at trophies to differentiate – not the sole criterion.

I’d rather awards were given on the basis that the player who won the award was part of a trophy winning team, than on the basis that the player was from the team which all the voting journalists support.

  • Ok that’s fine we’ll have to agree to disagree. lol. I just think beating aust home and away[first time in Brisbane ever]; the 6nation champs[almost the BIlions team] and France[first time in 16 years in france] might count on bokke side. Compared to beating wp in capetown. Then again I may be wrong!

    7. Willie
    8. Zeilinga

  • @KingsArmy (Comment 1) : Coach of the year – Venter, at least he put a plan in place to beat a stronger, better psyched up, confident opponent. Agree Stonehouse needs some recognition.

  • @KingsArmy (Comment 20) : I have a deep seated hatred for Bulls supporters. The first to crow about their players and the first to denounce others opinions. The only player I am adamant about is Lambie, simply because Steyn is as incompetent as that sign language guy at Mandela’s memorial.
