The rumour mill – 1st edition 2014

It may be a new year, but not much has changed in terms of player movement, with plenty of stars either confirming moves or being on the verge of big moves. This is what went down during the festive season.

The most recent of stories is that Rory Kockett has verbally agreed to join Toulon at the end of his Castres contract. Toulon owner Mourad Boudjellal has made public comments to the effect that Kockett has agreed to join the club at the end of the 2014 season.

A confirmed move to Toulon is that of James O’Connor, who left Australia under a cloud during 2013, ending up at London Irish for a short stint, financing his negotiations with the Top 14 side.

Further player movement to Toulon, although only in the initial rumour stage, is that Leigh Halfpenny is also on his way to the French side. The French side is fast becoming the Chelsea of the rugby world, we can only hope that the players are kept happy and talent is not wasted.

Other big news, although not very surprising, is the fact that Sonny Bill Williams will be returning to Rugby Union, and yes, you guessed it, just in time to represent the All Blacks at the next World Cup. Williams has agreed to join the Chiefs at the beginning of the 2015 season, for at least two years. Whether he actually stays on beyond the World Cup year, remains to be seen.

Troubled All Black Zac Guildford has also confirmed a move to Europe, Clermont bagging the talented winger. It is reported that he has signed a two year deal with the club.

That’s all we have for now, but the mill will certainly be back soon with more confirmed reports and outrageous rumours.

  • must admit to getting a little confused regarding O’Connor. I thought he’d decided to head back to Aus because he wants to play in the 2015 World Cup?

  • All the best to everybody and the Sharks for 2014 ! It is clear Jake will choose who he wants for this S15 season. I am sure there will be a few surprises. With 10+ springboks and many players with S15 experience there will certainly be some disgruntled sharks players. They are surely not going to play VC. Will they leave ? How big is the S15 squad and when do we expect an announcement on the squad and captaincy? My view is Keegan wont be the Captain ?

  • @Observer (Comment 4) : Didn’t the CEO say that he wants the Sharks to employ squad system going forward? That would mean that the guys don’t have to play each and every game. I believe Jake will continue with what John and Brendon started, which would mean a competitive 1st 15 will have to be deployed every week, only reason I could think of for considering Watson.

  • @robdylan (Comment 1) : @Richard Ferguson (Comment 3) : James is going to head back in January 2015 to join a franchise and make a bid to be in the World Cup squad.

So he can still play half a season for Toulon before he goes back.

The other Lions rumour is that they are negotiating with a few overseas based Boks to join them after the European season for the second half of Super Rugby with at least one of the current Bok squad members “confirmed”. No names yet.

    Lol. sorry fella- could resist.

I do, however, feel it my duty to prepare y’all for the second coming of the Luke. Its gonna happen, him and Jake are gonna bury their hatchet and he’ll take over the captains armband from Keegan before the season is finished…
He’ll do exceptionally well at first – he is a great player after all – until right before the knock-out games, whence he’ll have a training ground argument with one of the du Plssis brothers that ends in fisticups and the Shark’s season will start to unwind like a ball of twine…

Season in tatters, he’ll depart Natal, with Jake replacing him with one of his sons.
