“Bismarck is a winner” – White

Jake White has explained to the Sharks website why he has appointed Bismarck du Plessis as his captain for the season.

“I consulted widely with people involved in this organisation, John Smit one of them,” White explained. “I need to stress that Bismarck brings a winning culture to the Cell C Sharks. He’s a winner. He’s won an Under 19 World Cup, an Under 21 World Cup, a senior World Cup, a Currie Cup, and there aren’t too many guys that can put that on their CVs. Both he and Ruan Pienaar had won all three World Cups before they were 22 years old and not too many can boast that kind of achievement in their rugby careers.

“There is no doubt in my mind he’s a freak, one of the best players in the world, the best hooker in the world.

“What I respect is that he could go anywhere in the world and earn five times what he is now and still get the guarantee from Heyneke Meyer about being a Springbok in the next World Cup. He’s chosen to stay here and if that doesn’t show people he’s dedicated to the Cell C Sharks then we’re on a different page. It’s not a reward for that, but it shows he is genuine.

“Everyone knows how good he is. I’m hoping that this role of captaincy, but more importantly, with the change in environment we are creating and the people we are putting around him, we will really upskill him in terms of the things he is weak at. He knows what his limitations are, even in terms of how he’s going to be a captain. He won’t get too many mentors better in world rugby than the one two floors up from him who has captained South Africa the most times. I’m just hoping – I don’t believe he can’t get better – that he can be that phenomenal player consistently.”

Talking about former skipper Keegan Daniel, White added, “Keegan will probably be a bit disappointed, that’s natural, he’s been a good captain. The thinking is for me to have a stamp of what I think is important for us as a group. The dynamics in the group are changing, there are some new guys who have joined the squad.

“I’ve worked with Bismarck before, he is a winner and has enormous presence in rugby. It’s not about individuals but what we do as a group.”

  • If it means less yellow cards they should’ve done it long time ago.

  • @KingsArmy (Comment 3) : True. Keegan copped some pretty basic offside penalties last year that did his team no favours.

  • Lets get real for a moment.

John Smith is a Shark and here to stay forever ;-) ;-)
We are spoiled for choice with a great squad including 12 springboks – We should thank the previous regime for getting and contracting most of the players
Bismarck is a world leading player and will be coached into being a great Captain- EQ Allowing. Bismarck is staying because of his father not the sharks, Jake or Springboks. Admirable person !!!! :!:
Jake is a world class coach – He has a nickname of Jake the Snake? The first international opportunity he gets and he is gone. He has stated that at the outset. So enjoy him while you can. Has he moved to Durban ?
We did poorly in the S15 2013 – good in the second half . We won the currie cup in 2013 – great

Our stars are aligned for the 2014 S15- So go sharks. Take one step at a time. Dream big but stay humble. We have to win enough matches and win the playoffs and final.

A last word. In every position except locks we have at least three great players. PSDT – great but what if he gets injured – God forbid. Lewies and Peet no S15 experience, Peet has all the talent and potential. Ettienne ??? Rumoured he is overrated and Jake’s boy ? Bressler is very good but have to prove fitness, Is he going overseas ? Marco is deeply experienced but might be too old ? Hewitt is big strong and aggressive with positive S15 experience. He seems to have fallen out of favour of late .
But no worries. The warm up matches and Jake’s experience will resolve this matter.

    Go Sharks S15 – 2014 – one step at a time

  • no offense to Keegan but how many times on this site have we called for him to be replaced because he wasnt first choice. So now this shows that Jake wants a captain who is a first choice.

  • As far As Keegan goes- i think he plays his best when he can play with freedom and not being captain. That said i think JW will use him as a 2nd half player in last 30min when game opens up. Same can be said for Tim Swiel i have a feeling. There are a lot of leaders in that team but i think they all respect Bismarck.
