John Smit and Jake White have added a third, vital, member to their dream team by confirming that Dr Sherylle Calder has signed a two-year contract to consult to the Sharks as a Visual Skills and Performance Specialist.

Dr Calder worked closely with White as part of his team when he, along with Smit, lead the Springboks to World Cup glory in 2007. As a huge admirer of her work, having seen first-hand how players respond to her methods and programs, White will be hugely pleased with this result.

He told the Sharks website that “Sherylle will be helping us with Eyegym to improve peripheral vision and awareness. She will also be assisting the kickers, which is a massive boost for us, as well as the youngsters in The Sharks Academy who will be able to learn a top range of skills from one of the best in the business.

“My association with Sherylle dates back to my earlier coach roles and I look forward to working with her again.”

John Smit added: “I would like to welcome Sherylle to The Sharks family. She is a leader in her field and her expertise and experience will be invaluable to the team’s ambitions going forward.”

  • This is staggeringly good news. I must say, this newfound professionalism at the Sharks union is giving me as much pleasure as the prospect of the Bulls losing all their Super Rugby games!

I love that. Doesnt mention he used her when he was trying to emulate SCW’s approach. It worked, after all.

Interestingly, Dr. Calder has already worked with the Bulls, Stormers and Lions in the past… so maybe you guys can catch up to the rest of us… ;-)

Smit is drawing on his time as Bok captain and you can see the strong influence of Saracens in what he is doing.

  • Saw some 2013 “highligths” on supersport just now and it brought me straight back down to earth.

We got blown away by the chiefs and lost against the bulls due to a missed penalty kick.

Sure hope it goes better this year …

  • Whats satisfying is that we have a more professional, and esteemed, coach than the Boks do. So I cant imagine Meyer giving Jake too many tips

Our Sharks will be heading to Springbok camps in a superior state than they will be returning.

I do feel that Jake could learn from both Plumtree and Venter(the latter provided some interesting insight in the latest Boksmart course), though. Plums claim to fame was the way in which he got our players straightening lines and offloading in contact, and I would like to see that train of thought continued within the parameters of Jake’s organised and structured game plan.
