We caught up with UKZN rugby captain Lwazi Ngcungama, to find out about a few of his favourite things and what a typical day is like for the student-athlete.

What is a typical day like for you?
My typical day is to wake up hit the gym before lectures, then hang out with my buddies before training or coaching.

Tough start to the campaign. Do you believe you guys can get a KZN team into the Varsity Cup? We deserve one with all our talent!
Yes I do and strongly feel that with the amount of talent that we have working together as a team that this is the year we get our team into the Varsity Cup.

What has been the highlight of your career so far?
I would have to say being called up to the KZN All Stars team that played against The Sharks as a form of a Currie Cup trial and being named the first black UKZN Impi captain.

How is it playing under John Mitchell? What is he like?
Its quite amazing playing under Coach Mitch we have learnt and still are learning a lot from him.

What is the best piece of advice you ever got?
My late grandmother always told me that in what ever I do I should always include God because I can do all things with the Lord on my side.

Where do you see yourself in five years’ time?
With my Sport science degree and hopefully playing for 1 of the big Rugby unions in this country (Sharks).

If you were not a rugby player, what would you be?
Probably would have studied something to do with accounting and finance.

Who from the sporting world, do you most admire?
Kieran Read

You have played against teams from most parts of the country. How do high do you rate the KZN premier division?
I strongly believe the KZN premier div is by far one of the best leagues in the country.

Toughest team you have faced?
I have to say College Rovers.

Favourite team?
Cell C Sharks

Fashion Icon?
David Beckham

Everyday wear?
T-shirt, Shorts and slops

Special Occasion Wear?
Shirt, smart jeans and formal shoes.

Shoes?
I love wearing slops.

Girlfriend?
Yes

John Mitchell on his captain?
Lwazi is energetic and has an aggressive style of play. Raw talent and is a player with potential. A leader with very good communication skills.
