Super Rugby 2014: Toyota Cheetahs (20) v Lions (21) F/T

Super Rugby is here, everybody! The competition opener takes place in Bloemfontein, with Naka Drotske’s Cheetahs, surprise knock-out contenders in 2013, hosting the newly reinstated (and sponsor-free) Lions.

The Cheetahs have been pretty good in pre-season, going through their warm-up phase unbeaten. They boast good continuity up-front, with the majority of last year’s pack returning for the new campaign. At the back, though, there’s a fair bit of change, with Rob Ebersohn’s move to Montpelier robbing them of a key play-maker. Johan Goosen is back, though and key for them will be to see how quickly he can gel with the new men on either side, former Kings scrumhalf Shaun Venter and namesake Francois from the Bulls, who’ll be at inside centre.

The Lions have been in the wilderness for a season and have thus named a rather green side, featuring no fewer that four Super Rugby debutants in the tight five alone. They will need to punch well above their paper-weight in this encounter to avoid leaving Bloemfontein with their claws firmly clipped.

In the interests of appeasing the gods of the rugby cliche, I have only one thing to say further: let the cat fight commence!

Kick-off is at 17h05 in the Republic.

Toyota Cheetahs: 15. Willie le Roux, 14. Cornal Hendricks, 13. Johann Sadie, 12. Francois Venter, 11. Raymond Rhule, 10. Johan Goosen, 9. Shaun Venter, 8. Philip van der Walt, 7. Lappies Labuschagné, 6. Boom Prinsloo, 5. Francois Uys, 4. Lood de Jager, 3. Coenie Ooshuizen, 2. Adriaan Strauss (captain), 1. Caylib Oosthuizen.

Lions: 15 Chrysander Botha, 14 Deon van Rensburg, 13 Lionel Mapoe, 12 Stefan Watermeyer, 11 Ruan Combrinck, 10 Marnitz Boshoff, 9 Michael Bondesio, 8 Warren Whiteley (capt), 7 Derick Minnie, 6 Jaco Kriel, 5 Franco van der Merwe, 4 Franco Mostert, 3 Julian Redelinghuys, 2 Robbie Coetzee, 1 Schalk van der Merwe.

  • Ligtoring Landman ?… was that name dished up as a punishment for something ?

Cheetahs have a better bench and a much better front row… Lions must kept their heads up or else this could get ugly. But first games always have that ” Unkown factor ” about them.

  • Willie le Roux can’t do anything right today.

But makes up for it by creating a beauty of a try for Rhule.

  • @KILLER SHARK (Comment 3) : Same with which side to attack. When they should go right, they go left and visa versa.

  • Lions can win this. No9 is the play maker but 12 needs to be substituted.

  • Entertaining, but frustrating game to watch. How many times have the Lions lost the ball 5 metres from the tryline?

Score is Cheetahs 20 Lions 18 after 75 min, by the way.

  • @Pablo Dinero (Comment 32) : JIP, sitter missed by Watts and the Lions kicked all theirs, if I’m not mistaken. Two tries to nil should read in the stats of the winning side. In cricket catches win matches. I suppose with rugby it’s kicks.

  • @Bayshark (Comment 36) : The hype is simply about what he can do…Not what he has done, and especially not what he has done under pressure!!!

Ideally I would like to see his best and Lambie’s best.

At this stage, only Lambie has actually proven himself under pressure
