Dell out, Stevens in

There’s a fair bit of “prop movement” for the Sharks today, with news filtering through ahead of any official announcements.

A few European sites broke the news this morning that former Baby Bok and Sharks under 21 prop Allan Dell will shortly leave Durban to join up with Alan Solomons in Edinburgh. Dell qualifies for Scottish selection via his grandmother and will thus look to establish himself as a future test player north of Hadrian’s Wall, after spending three mostly successful years in the Sharks junior setup.

It goes without saying that we wish Allan all the best for his future career with Edinburgh and hope that he goes on to achieve his dream of representing Scotland in test rugby.

Bigger news, though (and no disrespect meant to Dell) comes in the form of confirmation from the Sharks that English test prop Matt Stevens will join the Sharks for 2 years, starting this Currie Cup season. Stevens, Durban born and educated before pursuing his rugby fortune in England, returns to end his career with the Sharks, where he will provide utility option as an experienced front ranker and will also allow better rotation and management of the Sharks’ Springbok props.

The Sharks will reveal full details about the Stevens signing in due course.

  • How much value does Stevens bring really. I ask this in ignorance. I mean, was he close or even kinda close to national selection for England in the last year?

  • Who was the other ‘monster’ loosehead that was training with the Sharks? Currently u19?

Is it possible that JW is just grooming him for the future and don’t see the potential in Dell?

  • @The Great Couch Shark (Comment 4) : He was part of the Lions squad that beat Australia last year and you may have noticed he gave the Sharks “All Bok” front row a pretty torrid time when they played Saracens a few weeks ago.

  • Stevens is really not that old, younger than Jannie and Beast if im correct. Dell really wasnt cutting it yet even at CC level so for me its a no brainer. Yes we lose a youngster but we gain a test prop and there will always be youngsters coming through- such as the massive u19 fellow we just got. Stevens will push our other test props and JW will make sure he behaves. Its good business in my books, just dunno how much rugby will be left when he arrives.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 13) : Saracens play their last Aviva Premiership game on 10 May but there might be a Heineken Cup fixture after that depending on the result of the game against Ulster in April. Stevens will be a huge asset in the Currie Cup too, though, given the guaranteed absence of Jannie, Beast and possibly Adriaanse too.

He is 31, but only 29 in playing years thanks to the compulsory lay-off.

Has 3 or 4 years left id imagine.

  • @BR (Comment 14) : @Greg (Comment 15) : @VinChainSaw (Comment 16) : Geez 31 only, people talking if he is 45 in the shade. We havnt bought Os Du Randt! Stevens definitely has a good few years ahead of him and will give the senior guys a break as well as making sure our CC strength is good. If youngsters want to make it then they have to prove it against him in practise- he isnt easy to scrum against.

  • I love Matt played with him as a junior the best man for team sprit and moral ever. And he is good. Great signing. Makes more sence than a certain recent lock signing….of note. I am a bits choked about resent talent being let go but respect to Dell he might play 44 tests for Scotland like Matt.

  • Sorry but Matt Stevens is much more quality than Dell. I don’t rate Dell at all yet Stevens is tried and tested at the highest level.

  • It was obviously a tough decision for Ally, he loves the Sharks and Durban as well. It took quite a while for him to make the decision. I can tell you now, for about 2 months last year after they made the offer, me and this cat were regularly having long discussions about the pros and cons of staying or leaving. In the end he went for the Edinburgh offer based on what he thought would be the best option for his career. It’s a good offer and he has a Scottish grandmother which puts him in with a good chance of representing Scotland 1 day.

Allan knows all too well that it’s a bittersweet moment for me to see him go, would’ve loved to see him play here, but it really is the best move for his career. He’s a man of exceptional character. He’s very thankful to the Sharks for the platform they’ve given him over the past 3 years.

I’m sure Rob will take the opportunity to give him 1 last interview, time permitting, to say his final goodbyes to the Sharks faithful.

Still suspect that Dell would do well to move to hooker.

  • @Big Fish (Comment 27) :  not yet. Definitely in the plans to go watch a game or 2. Don’t think it’ll be possible anytime this year. Certainly next year seems like a plan

He loves prop, got the ball skills and mobility of a hooker. So he’ll probably stay at prop.

  • Well, I am really feeling sorry for Wors. He worked to hard last year just to be moved to CC. And I am sure there will be more signings from other clubs. I lot of guys feel that they will never get the opportunity to play for the Boks now they are looking for grrener pastures. I feel that there are far too many blue eyed selections. HM was carrying on about stats when he selected Marcel, but he only stopped there. Did not look further at other stats.
