Injury concerns for Coetzee

As if it wasn’t bad enough losing their opener against the Lions, to the tune of 10-34, the Stormers will need to assess the fitness of three key players ahead of Friday’s fixture against the Hurricanes at Newlands.

The biggest cause for concern, according to coach Alister Coetzee, is the rib injury sustained by Argentine lock import Manuel Carizza. Brought in to replace the Japan-bound Andries Bekker, the big Puma is a key player in an area where the Stormers’ depth is thin and with De Kock Steenkamp also on the injury list, Coetzee will be hoping for some good news.

Also in doubt for the Canes clash are Schalk Burger and Siya Kolisi, who picked up groin and shoulder injuries respectively against the Lions.

  • They have a problem at lock – but I would play Grobler and Elstadt at lock for the time being.

Burger and Kolisi was so poor this past weekend – the replacement could be Fourie and Rhodes without weakening the team. I think that a recovery is very likely this coming weekend – provided Coetzee does not stuff up the selections again.

  • @robdylan (Comment 3) : Sorry! In my defense I was recovering from a minor panic attack at the time of writing. ;-)

  • @VinChainSaw (Comment 7) : Bit of both really. The Stormers were bad but the Lions also played out their skins. The Stormers were visibly shell-shocked after 20 min.

  • Rhodes should start at lock, Carizza was average. Fourie or Carr could start at flank although I would choose Fourie.

  • @Pokkel (Comment 8) : Carizza made the defensive error that allowed the first try, Aplon looked to be napping at the back

  • @Clayton(PJLD) (Comment 12) : Well, yesterday when I was at the teller at Pick & Pay I noticed that Aplon is on the cover of the new Huisgenoot, so I can understand him resting on his laurels; clearly he has made the big time, so what does he have to prove!

  • @VinChainSaw (Comment 7) : The Lions defense was a thing of beauty though. I think most teams would have struggled against it. Whitely looked to be omnipresent at times. Just not sure whether the Lions can keep that up for an entire Super Rugby season?

  • @vanmartin (Comment 14) : Don’t whant to be a party pooper, I am really happy the Lions are doing so well. I just hope this streak carries on for just one more week but that next week it will be cut short by a romping Sharks display

  • @Saffex (Comment 19) : No, no, no, there is a youtube clip where he makes a massive hit on someone. Truely, there was a link to the clip on the Stormers website when his signing was announced.

  • @Michael (Comment 2) : If Burger was at any other union, he would be on the reserve bench until he could prove that he is back to his pre-illness best. But the man is a mythical being in the western cape, so they go and make him Vice Captain. Go figure…

  • @Culling Song (Comment 13) : And he was also in an Outsurance sponsor ad before Sewende Laan, so that’s some serious celebrity clout there  In all seriousness, he’s an amazing player, and was absolutely electric last year. Probably just a bit rusty…
