Taute return prompts backline shuffle

The Stormers have named an arguably stronger lineup than the one that capitulated in Johannesburg, for Saturday’s first home Vodacom Super Rugby game, against the Hurricanes at Newlands.

Schalk Burger, Manuel Carizza and Siya Kolisi, all of whom left the field during the Ellis Park debacle, have been cleared of their respective injuries, meaning an unchanged pack (and a shot at redemption for the forwards, who were simply outclassed by their no-name opposition on Saturday evening).

It’s at the back, though, that things have changed – and rather substantially. Jaco Taute has recovered from his latest knee complaint and will finally start in the number 15 jersey, prompting a shift to left wing for Gio Aplon. Kobus van Wyk retains his spot on the right, but Damian de Allende, who wore 11 against the Lions, now shifts to his favoured inside center position, meaning a move one spot further out for captain Jean de Villiers.

Michael van der Spuy, the unlucky man to don the 13 shirt last time around, is out in the cold and has not even warranted a bench spot.

DHL Stormers: 15 Jaco Taute, 14 Kobus van Wyk, 13 Jean de Villiers (captain), 12 Damian de Allende, 11 Gio Aplon, 10 Demetri Catrakilis, 9 Louis Schreuder, 8 Duane Vermeulen, 7 Schalk Burger, 6 Siya Kolisi, 5 Manuel Carizza, 4 Rynhardt Elstadt, 3 Frans Malherbe, 2 Scarra Ntubeni, 1 Steven Kitshoff.
Replacements: 16 Deon Fourie, 17 Oliver Kebble, 18 Pat Cilliers, 19 Michael Rhodes, 20 Nizaam Carr, 21 Nic Groom, 22 Kurt Coleman, 23 Ryno Eksteen.

  • If you look at the names in that pack you cannot understand how they were that shit…

But if you take moment you will find one.

ALL BRAWN – NO BRAIN. It never wins against quality opposition…Balance of the two does

  • And of course the way they are coached is even worse…the brain that is there (Burger, Kolisi) gets told to play mind numbing 1 dimensional rugby!!!

  • Good side on paper but they will have to show a lot more guts and determination if they are going to win. The Canes are not a bad side at all.

  • Shuffling the deck just confuses the issue even more. Questionable whether Taute will make any difference at FB, but lets wait and see. An improved performance by the forwards is the only thing that will help them.

  • Question for the guys who watched the full Stormers Lions game. Were the Stormers more awful than the Lions were good?

I only saw periodic parts of the game but whenever I took a look the Stormers were camped in the Lions half/22 turning down penalty after penalty and persisting with dreadfully slow and predictable 1 man pick n drives.

  • @gregkaos (Comment 9) : Bit of both to be honest. Lions pressured the Stormers into mistakes. The lions didnt create too much from there own ball but did cause havoc in broken play. The Stormers were quite predictable and made a lot of handling erros and gave away a lot of penalties at ruck time. So there wasnt anything too special from the Lions apart from Boschoff’s kicking ability but Stormers were always playing catchup and they didnt seem to really have much fight in them.

  • I think Coetzee has taken them as far as what he can, they need someone new to take them to the next level, same as Cheetahs

  • @pierre_mackie (Comment 15) : Robbie Deans would have been a good choice esp considering the divided Stormers / Crusaders supporters there. ;-)

  • @SheldonK (Comment 12) : Cheers. Thought that was the case. Just checked the Vodacom stats and those handling errors are quite bad. Stormers 15 Lions 2.

  • That’s a better looking team but I think the Canes will be up for it this weekend. More so than against us.
NZ teams in general seem to enjoy playing in CT.

  • @gregkaos (Comment 9) : we’ll the lions were decent but nothing flashy from them.If the sharks played like the stormers did about every one would have asked the coach to leave . If I may use tennis term the stormers would have lost 6-0 not because the lions had many winners but the stormers made way too many unforced errors.

  • @pierre_mackie (Comment 15) : Not just Alister Coetzee but in fact his entire coaching staff have been a little ponderous. Robbie Fleck has innovated bugger-all with the vast amount of backline talent at his disposal. It seems that the game-plan is to simply wait for Aplon or De Jong to make a clean break.

  • @robdylan (Comment 4) : Speaking of LMS, I see there’s a large scale massacre after some of the weekend’s upsets. You know strange things are happening in SA rugby when it’s a safer bet to bank on a Waratahs’ win.

  • @vanmartin (Comment 25) : Waratahs were my banker, didnt help much because when I wanted to pick them the game had closed. I like making late picks and thankfully Super Brus accommodates me with this. hint, hint mr administrator.

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 29) : I would also think that the tie-break rule favouring early picks would have convinced you that you’re not onto a winning strategy there :)

  • @robdylan (Comment 30) : Of course thats obvious but last weekends first game kicked off at 8.30. I got my Bru picks in at about 8.10, after noticing that LMS was closed.

  • @robdylan (Comment 31) : What tie break rule?…  Maybe I should actually go and read the rules for a change.

What I did notice when I tried to make a pick was that there were a lot of other people that also had not made their picks.
