Lions lose Hollenbach too

In something of a blow to continuity, centre Alwyn Hollenbach has failed a late fitness test and will thus join Derick Minnie on the sidelines as the Lions are named to take on the Vodacom Bulls in Pretoria this weekend.

Minnie fractured his cheek against the Stormers last week and will thus be out of action for anything from a month up; his place in the starting team goes to former Bull Warwick Tecklenberg, with fit-again utility forward Willie Britz occupying the bench spot that the new number seven vacates.

At the back, another former Bull, Stefan Watermeyer, moves one step close to the action to replace Hollenbach at inside centre, leaving a gap at 13 which is filled by JW Jonker. Jonker, who played a bit of Super Rugby for the Cheetahs early in his career before disappearing into an injury-enforced wilderness, has made great progress since coming back out of retirement and will look to make an impact for his new side. Yet another former Bulls player, Courtnall Skosaan, will seek a debut cap off the bench for the Lions as the only uncapped player in the match 23.

Lions – 15 Chrysander Botha, 14 Deon van Rensburg, 13 JW Jonker, 12 Stefan Watermeyer, 11 Ruan Combrinck, 10 Marnitz Boshoff, 9 Faf de Klerk, 8 Warren Whiteley (c), 7 Warwick Tecklenburg, 6 Jaco Kriel, 5 Franco van der Merwe, 4 Franco Mostert, 3 Julian Redelinghuys, 2 Robbie Coetzee, 1 Schalk van der Merwe.
Subs: 16 Willie Wepener, 17 Jacques van Rooyen, 18 Ruan Dreyer, 19 MB Lusaseni, 20 Willie Britz, 21 Ross Cronjé, 22 Courtnall Skosan, 23 Coenie van Wyk.

  • im not reading anything into the names on the team sheet as they have all been punching way above their supposed calibre. Bulls need to win at all costs so they will be desperate. Should be a goodie

  • Hard to call. The Bulls in all likelihood will come flying out of the starting blocks and play like men possessed. Or not. Not sure we’ll see much of a crowd there either. For me the most interesting part will be seeing whether VM starting will make a difference.
