Sharks to keep it steady for now

Speaking to the official website, Cell C Sharks Director of Rugby Jake White has revealed that he’s unlikely to tinker much with his winning formula during the upcoming stretch of matches.

White has been in the enviable position of being able to name an unchanged match 23 for the Sharks’ opening two fixture, both of which resulted in comfortable wins. With no injuries coming from those fixtures and an early bye, the smart money would be on the Sharks sticking with the exact same selection for this weekend’s match against the Lions, as well as the three games that follow ahead of the second bye round.

“Rotation will obviously take place because we’re going to have to give some guys opportunities, to keep fresh as well as keeping the guys in the system fresh,” White told Sharksrugby editor Michael Marnewick.

“But the way our draw is, with two byes in six weeks, mass rotation wouldn’t take place during that six week period. There might be guys we give starts to and change it up a bit during that block, but generally I think in the way the draw is, we have two weeks, then a bye, then four weeks, then a bye, then seven weeks on the trot. Most of the rotation and opportunities will come in that seven week block when we really need to start freshening up players.”

In other words, White’s going to be looking to this group to get through the upcoming games against the Lions, Reds, Bulls and Waratahs, before taking further stock after the second bye in round eight.

  • My only worry with this approach is that we may have problems when trying to rotate players into the side after playing virtually no top flight rugby for almost 6 months? But I guess decisions like this are why JW is in the coaches box and I’m on the couch yelling at the TV every weekend

  • Quick question: – Do teams still get 4 points for a bye & if they do when do they add those points?

  • @KingRiaan (Comment 15) : Yep thats the one. The story grabbed my fancy when I read it and thats why I used the image. Maybe its time to change it but on the other hand maybe it can be used as a symbol for the Sharks bringing out the heavy artillery.

  • Is it just me that noticed but watching the other SA teams in action this weekend i noticed how bad their decision making is on attack. There were numerous try scoring chances that went astray because of bad decisions and/or passes. To me it is a bit concerning, altho i do know its early season

  • Every game is a tough game in Super Rugby, but our biggest concerns at this point is the Waratahs!!! Naturally the Chiefs and Crusaders will join that top tier soon enough, but these guys mean business. They have a big pack, strong scrum, big ball carriers and absolutely devastating backs!!!

I just hope that Jake continues to evolve our expansive showing from week 1!!
