Round 4 gave us a lot more to smile about from a South African perspective, with improved performances from all five teams (even if only two won).

Let’s pick a form South African side from the round’s action.

15. I thought Sharks man SP Marais had a great game as part of a winning team effort. His opposite number, Marnitz Boshoff, is runner up, despite his best play of the week coming after he was moved into the flyhalf channel.
14. I was about to pick Wille le Roux until I realised he actually played left wing this week. It’s not a great position to select, this one, since nobody is really putting their hand up. We’ll give it centurion Akona Ndungane, with brother Odwa the runner up in a field hardly clamouring for selection.
13. Bok captain Jean de Villiers probably deserves at least something for his efforts. Sharks danger man Paul Jordaan came close and would have got in, but for a few fumbles.
12. Big Damian “Doogz” de Allende had another great day at the office, scoring a cracking try against hte Crusaders. Bulls man Jan Serfontein came close – very close.
11. Once again, Lwazi Mvovo put in a superb all-round performance and on current form, must surely be coming strongly into the Bok frame. Let’s give Willie that honourable mention for making lots of metres, even if his chip kicks are starting to look oh so 2013.
10. Tough to pick against the hometown hero, but we felt Jacques-Louis Potgieter‘s all-round game was perhaps just that little bit stronger than Frans Steyn’s. Then again, Potgieter did have the luxury of practising in the position all week…
9. Another one where the Bulls and Sharks men were really hard to separate. Cobus Reinach gets our vote, but it could just as easily have gone to Francois Hougaard, who seems to have rediscovered mojo by the bucketload.

8. Ryan Kankowski. I’ve already typed more letters than I need to use to justify this one. Duane Vermeulen came a distant second.
7. Lots of hands going up here, including those of Willem Alberts and Jacques du Plessis, but seriously, with the sort of performance that Schalk Burger put in, there could be no competition.
6. Deon Stegmann made a difference for the Bulls, but simply wasn’t in the same league as our man Marcell Coetzee. Another player who’s making big claims at this stage.
5. Victor Matfield continues his comeback and is not looking too bad, while Franco van der Merwe continues to soldier on bravely in an inexperienced Lions tight five. Pieter-Steph du Toit wasn’t at his absolute best this week, but was still good enough to edge a spot in our team. If you want justification, check the log.
4. Flip van der Merwe was imperious for the Bulls and wins selection virtually unopposed, although Mike Rhodes (brainfart aside) and Anton Bresler also did some strong work.
3. For the second week running, I’m forced to pick Werner Kruger. I need to lie down in a darkened room. Props to Lions rookie Julian Redelinghuys for a strong performance against top opposition.
2. Adriaan Strauss and Bismarck du Plessis are the contenders. Neither was on top form, but we’ll give it to the Sharks man because his team won.
1. Our fifth Shark in the pack is Beast Mtawarira, who had a strong game. Let’s mention Schalk van der Merwe here too… I’m not sure how much of what he did was legal, but he got away with it all the same.

  • Did Paul Jordaan have an operation today? Do you know how long will he be out?

  • @bokbok (Comment 1) : I hope this is not the case, we are already thin at 13 and he was pleying some good rugby!
On that note, is there any news on Lambie? Do they know what was the cause of his illness yet?

Rumour is it’s a knee injury.

Hope Kleinhans doesn’t get fined or worse for that tweet.

  • These teams of the week show that should Hyneke Meyer pick on form the Bok side could be quite interesting indeed.

  • @robdylan (Comment 9) : No look for sure but if i just look at a guy like DeAllende,Whitely, Kanko, SP Marais, PSDT, Coetzee, Mvovo, Boschoff, Burger…theese guys werent exactly Bok regulars last year but in all fairness have seriously put up their hands this year. Meyer will probably give form a thought but will pick his side based on last years performances and then there is the whole European Boks issue to throw into the mix

  • @SheldonK (Comment 11) : if anything, I find it very encouraging that local options are putting their hands up to challenge the foreign legion.

  • I’d be tempted to nominate Sbu for the 14 spot based only on his 5 minute cameo. The man looks eager to force his way into a starting spot this season.

  • @robdylan (Comment 13) : Well my next question is how good is the foreign legion and how much does experience trump form. I mean besides Francios Louw, Juan Smith, Ernst Joubert none of the European Legion are really performing that well. Quite a few are injured. And hard to judge those in Japan
