Wednesday fun: where does your nick come from?

While we’re waiting for news, let’s spend some time on this delightful hump day getting to know each other a little better.

This idea was sparked by one of our poster, “West Indies Cricket Board” getting his third star (well done sir!). It suddenly occurred to me that there’s probably a really good story behind why he’s chosen to call himself that, but I just don’t know what it is. I’m even more sure that there are a hundred similar such stories out there.

So tell me, Sharkswold posters, what made you choose the nick you use on this site?

  • It came from a friend of mine, who was particularly “thrifty” with his finances. On one instance, he asked me to call him but after I said that I was short of free minutes, he gave me the name Miser which appended to my real name, became Jerem-iser.
No prizes for figuring what my real name is. Personally, I would have preferred Jeremazing.

Perhaps more interesting is my fantasy league team name, Apollo, which I named after the Greek sun god. I can’t remember why, though.

Having the same name Ulrich, I got the nick name Uli from a young age from my cousins, at high school playing for Richards Bay high in the dark blue rugby jerseys (similar to the old Blue Bull jerseys) and being on the wrong side of the law a few times, I got the Nick Uli Boelie.

  • A friend’s brother (our lift back then) decided to call me koringkriek, I was the lucky one, my friend got gatvlieg. Him and his friends kept up with those names, which we ourselves adopted, and very soon modified, he became Fly, I became Kriek. Kriek was most often already taken on most online platforms though (and those that accepted it, I was often mistaken for a she Kriek), so I became Die Kriek.

  • i chose poisy short for poison. the story goes in 2003 i was in my last year at primary school(grade 7)and i was on the very big and round side of things but also tall. i played lock and prop but one day at practice the coach bought a buuny chow and put it at the end of the field and got the whole team together and said “first one to make it to the end of the field gets the bunny chow” they didnt give me much of a chance because of my size but heck i was hungry and i ran and beat even the wingers and thus my coach said “you are quick like poison” and everyone started calling me poison and the girls called me poisy. needless to say the next game i played outside centre and we were unbeaten in our league

Since we live next to the Rhine river and the Sharks is my team, I thought the ridiculous notion of a shark swimming in the Rhine river is fitting, hence Rhineshark.

I also sometimes use Letgo9. 9 is my favorite number and Joost vd Westuizen was always my favorite player. I know, ironic, considering how much I do not like Bulls, but I was a young girl when he started playing and he was cute and then he was just an excellent player.

I earned the name due to my regrettable tendency to kill those individuals that cannot keep up.
