As anticipated, veteran Willie Wepener starts at hooker in the only change to the Lions starting team that will take on the Reds at Ellis Park this weekend.

Wepener comes into the number 2 shirt to replace Robbie Coetzee, out with a knee injury.

Youngster Mark Pretorius will seek a debut off the bench as replacement, while a further change sees Stephan de Witt included for the first time after Warwick Tecklenberg was ruled out due to concussion.

Elton Jantjies has been sent down to the Vodacom Cup squad for gametime this week, with Lionel Mapoe over his latest injury and included in the number 22 jersey.

  • Jantjies, Andries Coetzee, Micheal Bondisio and Alwyn Hollenbach are all in the Lions Vodacom Cup team for Saturday with Jantjies starting to give him some much needed game time to regain form. With the Lions having an off week next week, these guys will have potensialy 160min of Vodacom Cup rugby to regain some form. Bohoff is in amazing form, but Jantjies is also a very good flyhalf. If both of them are on form the Lions will have more options. I say Ackerman made the right call.

  • 16 Wallabies vs one 20 minute Bok – fair contest :)

If the Lions can disrupt good possession to Genia and Cooper they have a chance

  • @SheldonK (Comment 1) : I doubt it. I think Jantjies knows as well as everyone else that he needs to regain his confidence. I reckon he’d be grateful for the opportunity to do so in a lower-pressure environment instead of collecting splinters.

  • @Baylion (Comment 3) : That’s the key and the Lions do have the personnel that know how to disrupt other team’s game plans, especially with Whiteley leading the charge. The game just shouldn’t turn into a free for all. The Reds will punish any team that makes that mistake.
