The Stormers – A team in trouble

Having lost four out of five games this season and the possibility of a fifth looming large this weekend the DHL Stormers are currently enjoying their worst start to a campaign since 2001.
To make matter worse for embattled coach Allister Coetsee he has added to his long injury list, Tiaan Liebenberg joined Schalk Burger on a Cape Town bound flight on Sunday after picking up a quadriceps injury during Saturdays loss to the Brumbies. Ruan Botha has a 50% chance of facing the Reds while Jaco Taute and Siya Kolisi  will be considered for selection

WP President Thelo Wakefield has expressed his extreme displeasure at the results this season, saying that while he has taken the injury toll into account, he, the board and the fans are fed up  and will be instituting sweeping changes to the management and back room staff. The Stormers squad has suffered numerous injury issues over the past few seasons and Wakefield wants answers as to what the cause of the high count is.

“It is very disappointing, and it is not what I expected. I placed my faith in the team. I met with the management tonight, and I can say that some hard words fell, and they know exactly what to expect,” he said.

“I informed the management this evening that there will be a couple of changes, and we are looking at all areas of the management – be it coaching or medical or whatever. The players are our most important assets, and at this stage, I need to look at the full monty – from a psychological level right down through to medical services.

“There will be additions to management, and we know exactly where we lack expertise. I cannot give names at this stage of who it might be.”

Wakefield would not be dragged into answering whether or not Coetsee and or any of his assistants would be dismissed  upon returning to CT but things certainly don’t look good for Allister and his staff with mounting media pressure calling for their heads Having lost four out of five games this season and the possibility of a fifth looming large this weekend the DHL Stormers are currently enjoying their worst start to a campaign since 2001.

  • Whakefield is useless!!! He and his group of good for nothing fatties must take their brief cases and run…they don’t know shit about management and know less about rugby. I feel for Coetzee, he needs more backup on the coaching front. Sad to sy but my Sharksman Dr Brendon Venter can step up to the plate.

And new legislation regarding club structures are needed. The traditional strong black and colored clubs have been so diluted. Every idiot starts a rugby club. And they all get to vote for Wakefield and they need to be financed. Some crazy shit been happening in WP country the past 5 years. SOS

  • Wakefield must be the first to go. He and his Crusaders / All Blacks supporting family need to vacate the Presidents suite ASAP. How the hell he can expect “his” players and staff to have complete faith in him and his structures when deep down they know he is rooting for the opposition borders on insanity.

  • @vanmartin (Comment 4) : Either a DOR in place or Allister to get the position of DOR. Currently he is spread very thin and takes more flak than he deserves.

A few specialists involved and perhaps the back of Fleckie

  • I will go with an upset for the weekend – stormers to beat the Reds, just by 3, but I don’t think the loss to the Lions and to us did anything for the reds, they have the travel factor this week and it might just assist the Stormers, but I still feel that there is something not ayoba at the Stormer camp and if they don’t shape quickly they will scrape the barrel this season

  • @Clayton(PJLD) (Comment 5) : @vanmartin (Comment 6) : I’d love to see them make Coetsee the DOR and bring in Nick Mallet and Brendan Venter as the coaches. Proudfoot can stay but Fleckie hasn’t been able to get the best out of a talented bunch of backs.

  • @Clayton(PJLD) (Comment 9) : No worries, just wanted to get a feel for your opinion on the situation. Whether you’re for or against changes and your opinion of AC. Was also interested in whether you’d mention Fleckie as I do get the feeling that with the personnel available to the Stormers, there should be more imagination on attack. So you’ve pretty much addressed everything I was curious about.

  • @ChrisS (Comment 16) : I think Mallet is tactically very sharp, but his people skills are non existent.

Get the Doctor with his bedside manner to get Province in shape, he’ll be able to handle the personality clashes and the amateurs vs. pros politics. It is close to his practice.

Coetsee needs a tactician and backline coach to assist him, I believe he has the necessary skills to work with the players.

  • @Clayton(PJLD) (Comment 15) : Mallet actually poached Kobus vd Merwe from Griquas, he had a very good cc season and was still in contract with them when Mallet approached him. It left Griquas high and dry without a coach for a while and was not seen in a good light.

  • @ChrisS (Comment 19) : It was well reported in the Cape media at the time. There are probably more behind the scenes shenanigans going on at any rugby union than happens between wannabe politicians when they sniff an election coming on. This is the one thing that I think will keep Brendan Venter away from the Stormers or if he does go and help out will ensure that his term will not be completed.

  • @Clayton(PJLD) (Comment 24) : people love to play join the dots… as if every coach who isn’t currently in a high-profile job is automatically interested in every job that comes up.

Only Jake White operates that way… :)

  • I just wonder if promoting AC to DOR is not a bit of the Peter Principle happening. With regard to Venter I firmly believe he will only work with a Union or Club that is willing to agree to a very unorthodox arrangement with him. Similar to the Sharks did in the CC last year. He was not head coach, and was not even really DOR, more a consultant type role. He never moved to Durban, continued his practice in the Cape, yet still had a very positive impact. I firmly believe that the only way WP will be able to secure his service is by agreeing to a very unorthodox arrangement. The question is whether WP is willing to move beyond the many paradigms that currently dominate their philosophy and management.

One further thought, sometimes it is less about the ability of the management team involved and more a matter of stagnation. In that case, cleaning house may be the way to go, and it is not necessarily an indictment on the current management team, but rather that an injection of “new” is necessary. This is basically what happened at the Sharks last year. I still believe that Plum is and was a superb coach, but had done all he could with the Sharks and an injection of “new” was needed. Often times, the players will respond positively to the “new” and the same players that had “reached their limit” previously can still make significant improvement.

So all I am saying is that there is no reason to be overly critical of the current management/coaching team at WP, but there certainly seems to be a dire need for something “new”.

Is it just me, or have they gone through a rather large amount of top coaches over the past 10 – 15 years?

They’ve now had: AC, Rassie, Gert Smal, Gary Gold was there somewhere, Nick Mallet…..was Brendon Venter ever coach there?…Alan Solomons…who else?
