Sharksworld has reliably learned that Cell C Sharks Director of Rugby Jake White has successfully lured Bok lock Albert van den Berg out of retirement to provide cover at lock in this year’s Super Rugby competition.
Van den Berg, who is currently forwards coach for the Vodacom Cup side, is already well acquainted with the systems and structures that White has put in place and furthermore will not use up any additional budget should he play, since he’s already on the Union’s payroll. With serious injuries to Pieter-Steph du Toit and Anton Bresler robbing the team of experienced options in the second row, van den Berg is just the sort of player White is looking for, bringing many years of battle-hardness to the lock position.
Van den Berg was unavailable for comment this morning, but his agent, former Bok centre Heinrich Fuls, revealed that Victor Matfield’s Super Rugby comeback had provided the necessary inspiration and motivation for his client to exchange his whistle for a pair of size 23 togs. “Spinnekop is still very upset about what happened in 2007,” says Fuls. “After the try he scored in the final quarter of that final, he really believed that his lifelong dream of winning a Super Rugby trophy was to be fulfilled. There’s simply no way he’s going to sit back and watch Victor go for his fourth medal when he doesn’t even have one.”Tweet
