Jordaan back in Sharks mix

The Sharks have confirmed, via their official website, that center Paul Jordaan is fit for selection this week.

Jordaan, who enjoyed a great start to the season, scoring tries in the big home wins against the Bulls and Lions, was forced out of action ahead of the Reds game in round 5 due to a knee injury that required surgical correction. His rehabilitation has now run its course and has been exactly in line with the four weeks initially confirmed by the Sharks.

The only headache for coach Jake White, though, is how (if at all) to re-incorporate Jordaan into the team this week. Since being asked to step into the breach in the unfamiliar number 13 jersey, S’bura Sithole has been in fine form, possibly one of the best players for the Sharks overall in the time Jordaan has been away. White has spoken of his desire to ensure he has as many speed merchants in his backline as possible, a desire which prompted a move to fullback for Lwazi Mvovo ahead of the last game in order to include four out-and-out-wingers in the starting lineup.

Prior to that last game against the Waratahs, the Director mentioned the possibility of looking at Jordaan as an inside center, thus adding his express pace to the mix as well. This would imply a shift to flyhalf for Frans Steyn – but after Fred Zeilinga’s great showing at pivot against the ‘Tahs, I’d say it now stands as unlikely that Zeilinga wouldn’t get another shot in the jersey.

My money would be on a bench spot for Jordaan at best this week, possibly at the expense of Heimar Williams.

The Sharks side to face the Lions at Ellis Park will be confirmed on Thursday morning.

  • I hope White continues with Zeilinga at flyhalf. After a week off I don’t think the team will change much this week. Jordaan of the bench I reckon.

  • I must say, reading the André Pretorius interview with regard to JW’s ability to know exactly how to work with each individual player, it would indicate that his comments regarding Zeilinga was calculated and done knowing, that Zeilinga would respond positively toward it.

JW seems to understand player psychology better than any coach, something which has been sorely lacking at the Sharks during the past 5-6 years…Mallet should grab his notebook and go for a few master classes.

  • given our unfortunate record when it comes to players’ 100th caps, though, it might be better for Odwa to earn his off the bench!

That’s how he got his 100th overall cap, if memory serves.

  • Zeilinga was good against the Waratahs but Frans Steyn was superb when he had to step into Lambie’s boots the week before that.

Good to know that we have two capable players and that we can rotate them as and when the game plan requires it.

I would play Steyn at 10 this weekend to unsettle Boshoff with a few big hits. Boshoff might just feel he can get the upper hand over Zeilinga.

Yes, nice to see you back and making sense right away.

I like the idea of unsettling Boshoff, as he is key to the Lions, and Frans was excellent at 10 and in fact has been a calming and mature player in our backline, but could it possible then also unsettle us. I’m not 100% sure about Jordaan at 12 and certainly not coming back from injury.

I think I’ll wait and see what Jake does and back that, but I think I would feel more comfortable with some continuity in selection this week.

  • I really hope they don’t play Frans at 10.
His kicking has been great but he plays far too loose there.

Keep Fred at 10 with the experience of Frans and Mcleod on his outside and inside respectively.
If that is the case I reckon they’ll play Jordaan off the bench at first with Sbura at 13.

I think the Lions will keep ball in hand a lot, well weather permitting

Odwa is a solid experienced player but he isnt going to turn a game on its head and win it for you late into the 2nd half like a Mvovo, SP or JPP will so probably better for Odwa to start with 1 of the others coming off the bench.

Starting Sbura at 13 will encourage him to even play better than he has been playing knowing that Paul is breathing down his neck. Will be at the game cheering the boys on.

  • Big game. Lions will out to prove a point after the lashing they got from Ackermann. We need to prepare well for this game. The Lions always fancy their chances against us and believe they can physically man-up to us. We need to ensure we play the territory game beautifully. We don’t want their kicking machine to dictate matters. Put the Lions under pressure and they start to panic.

  • I have always thaugh of JPP as a fullback. He is a good wing. But as a fullback he gets more ball. He’s tall and good in the air. He can join the backline on attack. He kicks well. I really think if he was given more time at fullback he could have been one of the most succesfull fullbacks in history. I hate it when a guy like JP only gets the ball 3 times in some games. But still a great player.

  • Pretty sure Paul Jordaan started at 12 in the final against the chiefs 2 years ago. Sbw was his opposite man. Did alright I think. Hopefully he starts of the bench, don’t think 12 is his long term position, he’s more a runner than a basher and why drop zeilinga when he played so well in currie cup and hasn’t done anything wrong yet in super rugby

Wow, you’re right. I can’t believe I didn’t remember that. The question is, how did he do?

That game wasn’t a good one. Why Plumtree made so many changes for the final, is beyond me.

He should have stuck with the team of the “quarters” and “semis”.

I don’t think Jordaan actually ever saw any of the ball… we were completely dominated in that game.

  • @Letgo (Comment 85) :
He only made one change from the semi to the final. And that was Jordaan in for Whitehead at 12.
The other was injury forced where Lambie couldn’t play the semi at 15 and then made the starting team at 15 in the final.

Also, Frans Steyn couldn’t play in the ‘finals’ as he was ineligible since he arrived at the Sgarks camp after April.

The midfield changed for each of the knockout games and with Frans Steyn not being available for knock out rounds, it was also different before that.

You’re right though, injury forced Plums hand.

  • Agree to an extent, but are we not perhaps over rating them. I mean how many have be sought by other Unions etc. Are we perhaps over valuing them? I may be taking a pessimistic view here but when other Unions have been struggling for hookers none came knocking at the Sharks? And maybe other factors were in play so im generalising

  • @robdylan (Comment 100) : Yeh i remember him laying for UJ but he also struggled for a consistent start. So just puts into persepctive how we Sharks fans rate a guy compared to others. The same and opposite applies to other positions. i mean take a guy like Gerhard Mostert- he was kind of valued here but in France he is gold for them. Same as the Cronje twins at the Lions. Guess different views

Reality of the situation, though, is that he was petrified of picking up a career-ending injury. That was what prompted the move to France. Wanted to maximise his earning potential while he was fit.

  • @vanmartin (Comment 103) : Kockott would have done wonders under JW…he’s a feisty bugger, but man, when you can harness that in a positive way, he’s an instrument of beauty.

Remember how many times he came on for the Sharks for his little Plumtree 5min. cameo’s at the end of the game, most of the time, if not always, scoring a try.

Haven’t seen much of him at the frogs either, but he’s consistently the top player in their league….often winning the game for his side…he’s a game changer.

Do players play till their body cant take it in SA bashing each other to pieces or do they opt for the European or Japanese teams where there is bigger squad rotation and more money. Its a tough toss up as at the end of the day this is how these guys earn a living and put food on the table…and for sum of them its a lot of food! haha

I don’t know, there was just something special about him in my eyes…very big, strong, mobile and the right amount of agro without giving away penalties.

Given though, I think I saw more in his potential to be great than probably him being consistently great.
