Province start for du Preez

It didn’t take Western Province long to unwrap their shiny new toy, with former Sharks age-group flyhalf Rob du Preez handed a start for the DHL WP Vodacom Cup side this weekend – at inside centre.

Du Preez was this week crowned the 2014 Varsity Cup Player of the Tournament after his exploits in the flyhalf position for Stellenbosch University and it was based on those performances that Western Province fought to free him from his Sharks contract and lure him to the Mother City. With Kurt Coleman, who has already played both Currie Cup for WP and Super Rugby for the Stormers, established at flyhalf for the Vodacom Cup side, du Preez will have to start his journey one position further out.

Western Province, currently third on the South Section log and sorely needing wins in their final two pool games to secure home ground advantage in the Vodacom Cup play-offs, host the second-placed Free State XV this weekend, most likely their direct competition for that sought-after home quarter-final. While Province coach John Dobson has included a number of Super Rugby tourists in his squad this week, they will need to play out of their skins to upset an in-form Free State side who have included Bok Heinrich Brussow at number 8 this week. Brussow is in the final stages of rehab after an injury and will use this game to earn selection to the Cheetahs Super Rugby side ahead of next week’s game against the Sharks in Durban.

Western Province: 15. Tiger Bax, 14. JP Lewis, 13. Huw Jones, 12. Robert du Preez, 11. Devon Williams, 10. Kurt Coleman, 9. Jean Nel, 8. Carel du Preez, 7. Sikhumbuzo Notshe, 6. Rohan Kitshoff (captain), 5. Jan de Klerk, 4. Tazz Fuzani, 3. Entienne Swanepoel, 2. Stephan Coetzee, 1. Alistair Vermaak

  • Are the Vodacom Cup rules as stringent as the Super Rugby rules in terms of eligibility for the play-offs?

  • I think this helps:

15.4 A player transferred or loaned to a new province that participates in a single round competition has to be available for selection for the new province at least the last two (2) pool matches of the competition immediately prior to a semi-final-, final- or promotion/relegation match, as the case may be, in order to be eligible to participate in a semi-final-, final- or promotion/relegation match for the new province.

  • And this:

15.7 A player who was part of a twenty-two (22) man Superugby Franchise team on four (4) or more occasions shall not be eligible to play in a semi-final and/or final match of a Vodacom Cup team of a province during that season.

  • I see both Du preez and Huw Jones go straight in after completion of Varsity Cup. Always thought DuPreez has the making of a better 12 than 10 and dont be surprised if he is being slowly groomed to replace JDV in the future.
