The Vodacom Bulls have shaken off injury concerns during the week and named an unchanged starting 15 for this weekend’s Super Rug by clash against the Waratahs in Sydney.

Earlier concerns about the fitness of captain Flip van der Merwe have been relieved, with the big lock cleared to start after taking a knock during Friday’s loss in Dunedin.

The only change to the match 23 sees Rudy Paige – currently uncapped – come onto the replacment bench in place of Ulrich Beyers.

Vodacom Bulls: 15 Jurgen Visser, 14 Bjorn Basson, 13 JJ Engelbrecht, 12 Jan Serfontein, 11 Francois Hougaard, 10 Jacques-Louis Potgieter, 9 Piet van Zyl, 8 Grant Hattingh, 7 Jacques du Plessis, 6 Jono Ross, 5 Victor Matfield, 4 Flip van der Merwe (capt), 3 Werner Kruger, 2 Callie Visagie, 1 Dean Greyling.
Replacements: 16 Bongi Mbonambi, 17 Marcel van der Merwe, 18 Paul Willemse, 19 Jacques Engelbrecht, 20 Rudy Paige, 21 Handré Pollard, 22 William Small-Smith, 23 Morné Mellett

  • I would have changed one of the loosies. Hattingh for vd Walt or Engelbrecht. It doesn’t look balanced.

And why – oh why – is Rudi Paige on the bench ????
Or still at the Bulls for that matter?

  • @Blue Centurion (Comment 2) : cause all the other scrummies left and if Hougie or van Zyl is unavailable your left with only him.

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 4) : think the Tahs are laughing all the way to the rucks. Bulls got a huge loose trio but also think the slowest in Super Rugby.

  • @JD (Comment 3) : No, you already have 2 scrummies starting, a third in the 23 is a true waste. Could have played Mastriet/Beyers and the impact would have been better on the match. Besides, if Paige is the best after Hougie and van Zyl, then the Bulls are in trouble.

  • @Blue Centurion (Comment 6) : was sure I saw Hougie at 9 but with him at 11 you’re right there’s no need for a third scrummie in the 23. Glad it’s weekend as apparently I’m seeing thing that’s not there.
