De Villiers returns to lead Stormers

The inclusion of captain Jean de Villiers at inside centre, after he missed out on their last game, is one of five changes to the DHL Stormers side that plays the Lions at Newlands this weekend.

The starting pack is unchanged – meaning no return for Schalk Burger this week – but there are a slew of changes behind the scrum, with Nic Groom and Demetri Catrakilis taking over at halfback from Louis Schreuder and Peter Gran respectively. Schreuder drops to the bench, with Grant moving to fullback, where he displaces Jaco Taute.

De Villiers returns at 12, meaning a shift wing-wards for Damian de Allende, who takes over the number 14 shirt from injured Kobus van Wyk. Sailosi Tagicakibau and Juan de Jongh are thus the only backs to retain their spots after the horrendous loss to the Waratahs a fortnight ago.

On the bench, Jurie van Vuuren returns to replace Taz Fuzani as lock cover, with Pat Cilliers also fit again and taking over from Ollie Kebble. In the final change, Vodacom Cup winger Devon Williams comes into the match 23 to stand in line to make a super Rugby debut.

DHL Stormers: 15 Peter Grant, 14 Damian de Allende, 13 Juan de Jongh, 12 Jean de Villiers (captain), 11 Sailosi Tagicakibau, 10 Demetri Catrakilis, 9 Nic Groom, 8 Duane Vermeulen, 7 Siya Kolisi, 6 Nizaam Carr, 5 Michael Rhodes, 4 Ruan Botha, 3 Frans Malherbe, 2 Deon Fourie, 1 Steven Kitshoff.
Replacements: 16 Stephan Coetzee, 17 Pat Cilliers, 18 Brok Harris, 19 Jurie van Vuuren, 20 Sikhumbuzo Notshe, 21 Louis Schreuder, 22 Devon Williams, 23 Jaco Taute.

  • Peter Grant at fullback is something I would never think of doing.

Will be interesting to see how he goes..

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 1) : I doubt the Stormers will lose to the Lions at Newlands, regardless of how Grant plays.

Hard to picture him as being influential at fullback though.

  • He doesn’t have the pace. Then again Taute has the pace but no idea what to do

  • @Clayton(PJLD) (Comment 4) : I feel terrible about Taute.

Such talent and potential, but turning into nothing.

WHY didn’t he join the Sharks when he had the chance?

  • @robdylan (Comment 5) : I’ve just said a similar thing to a mate on email. Lionel Cronje was similar, ridiculous at u 20 but eish, injuries and trying to hard killed em.

You guys would have just shipped him off to Japan or Orstaalia

  • @robdylan (Comment 5) : me thinks that like for most players the players salary and amount of commission that the manager received counted more than where the players future development would be best.

  • @Clayton(PJLD) (Comment 7) : don’t forget there’s also Europe if Japs and Orstaalia don’t want them. We’re an equal opportunity union if you don’t make the team we’ll send you any place you wanna go, even to the Kings and Weer Probeer.

  • Stormers have no hope in hell of making the play-offs, why not rest Jean for the rest of the SR season?

  • Interesting side. I think Grant will do well at 15. He has a good rugby brain

  • @Mpandla (Comment 10) : cause the coach is fighting to keep his job. Winning as many games as possible will help and then there’s the pride thing of no team wanting to end bottom of tbe SA and overall logs as weel as bbeating the other SA teams.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 11) : a rugby brain he has but speed is what be really lacks. Think some forwards will beat him.

Agree, only a year or so ago he was a shoe in for Bok 15 or even 13… I can’t believe how much a couple of injuries and change of union influenced his performance.

I really hope he can get back on top though.

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 14) :

I think they will alternate as the match goes on.

Catrakilis has a bigger boot on clearances but Grant attacks the gain line more, and doesn’t sit as deep in the pocket.

Should be good to see them go, the Stormers might get the best of both worlds..

  • @JD (Comment 13) : Well Catrakilis, Van Aswegan, Coleman arent exactly speedsters. Neither is Taute these days due to his injuries so best of a bad situation. He will be solid but maybe not spectacular

  • @JD (Comment 19) : No no, Daniller is a glorified lock. Least Grant has some ball skills and will join the line and can defend

  • @robdylan (Comment 5) : taute really trained hard, he is faster bigger and stronger than ever. He cut his party ways for 2014, but still things not panning out for him. He is really dedicated. Think the province hoodoo of Zero to ”Hero” got to him. Like a few other province ”heroes” is history.
